The Governing Body of Ysgol Garth Olwg is keen to appoint an ambitious, enthusiastic, dynamic and creative Teacher to join the Nyth Centre, which is a specialist provision for pupils with complex and severe learning needs. This provision is a source of great pride for us as a school and has been highly successful since its establishment in 2024.
Ysgol Garth Olwg opened in September 2019 on the Garth Olwg Community campus, in Pentre’r Eglwys, the former site of Garth Olwg Welsh Primary School and Garth Olwg High School. The school teaches over 1250 pupils from the Pontypridd area and builds on past successes.
We are recruiting a Teacher to teach pupils in Years 7-11 who face challenges regarding their attitudes towards learning, maintain positive behaviour and engage with their learning pathways. We are looking to appoint a teacher to work collaboratively with the ALN and Wellbeing Team to ensure our pupils realise their potential.
We wish to appoint a dynamic teacher who:
- has the desire to work in a specialist classroom or has experience working in a similar environment;
- has a sound understanding of effective ALN provision including thorough knowledge of the ALN Act;
- possesses excellent communication skills;
- is dedicated and enthusiastic about working with pupils with behavioural difficulties;
- has the ability to establish new systems and processes while collaborating effectively with staff;
- has high expectations regarding the development and progress of pupils with ALN;
- can lead, motivate and inspire others;
- is eager to share good practice with others in the school and beyond.
Job Expectations:
- Manage all aspects of the daily operation of the provision, including managing support staff, interventions, and pupil timetables;
- Ensure a teaching programme where the teacher will teach some lessons, provide an alternative curriculum and where necessary attend lessons to support pupils within the lesson;
- Communicate needs and provision with mainstream teachers;
- Collaborate with the Wellbeing Team to assess, write IDPs, and plan interventions for the pupils;
- Connect with alternative providers and placements in work and ensure the quality of their work;
- Work closely and collaborate with external agencies on delivering support programmes;
- Manage the behaviour of vulnerable pupils to prevent exclusion and dissatisfaction;
- Ensure accurate recording of achievement, attendance and behaviour and ensure this data is readily available for monitoring and evaluation purposes;
- Monitor individual progress and set targets for improvement on a daily/weekly basis;
- Monitor attendance and curriculum outcomes for students using the provision;
- Maintain regular contact between the school and home as needed, establishing constructive relationships with parents, exchanging information, keeping them informed and facilitating support for their child;
- Lead, coordinate and ensure high standards in behaviour support and specific wellbeing interventions for the pupils.
