Temporary – Caretaker

Location: South Croydon with occasional travel to Redhill.

Pay: £14.09 per hour.

Working hours: Full‑time, Monday to Friday, rotating shifts, starting ASAP for an initial 6‑week period.

Shift Patterns:

  • 07:00 – 15:00
  • 08:00 – 16:00
  • 10:00 – 18:00
  • 14:00 – 22:00

Database Security Check: Ideally you hold a DBS on the Update Service. If not, a DBS check will be required before starting.

Role Overview:

The Caretaker is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, clean, and welcoming environment across the site. Working as part of the facilities team, the successful candidate will support the day‑to‑day operation of the premises through maintenance, security, porterage and customer service duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out opening and closing duties in line with the shift rota.
  • Assist with the general upkeep of buildings and outdoor areas.
  • Undertake routine and reactive maintenance tasks.
  • Complete basic carpentry, plumbing, painting and decorating work.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues requiring specialist attention.
  • Inspect and maintain fixtures, fittings and communal areas.
  • Set up and clear rooms for meetings, events and activities.
  • Move furniture, equipment, materials and supplies as required.
  • Collect, distribute and process incoming and outgoing mail and deliveries.
  • Monitor stock levels and replenish supplies where necessary.
  • Provide a professional and helpful service to staff, visitors and contractors.
  • Ensure the site remains secure and compliant with health and safety requirements.
  • Report hazards, incidents and security concerns promptly.
  • Assist with first aid duties on a rota basis (training can be provided).
  • Provide support and cover for colleagues when required.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Previous experience in a caretaker, facilities assistant, maintenance operative, porter or similar role.
  • Experience working within a busy and fast‑paced environment.
  • Good practical maintenance and DIY skills.
  • Strong communication and customer service abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A sound understanding of health and safety procedures.
  • Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Full UK driving licence (desirable).
  • First‑Aid certification (desirable or willingness to undertake training).
