The Seasonal Parks Labourer is responsible for routine maintenance and care of outdoor open spaces within the Town of Devon, with a primary focus on preparing and maintaining the Paragon Ballpark throughout the season. This role ensures that ball diamonds, grounds, and related amenities are safe, functional, and well-presented for players, spectators, and visitors. The position includes ball diamond grooming, mowing, inspections, repairs, horticulture support, and assisting with community events as needed. Seasonal Labourers are trained to operate a range of tools and equipment to complete their duties safely and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ball Diamond Maintenance & Preparation: Rebuild ball diamonds after use, ensuring they are game-ready. Reset bases, home plates, and pitcher’s mounds. Rake and maintain shale infields and ensure surfaces are level and safe. Perform weed removal and hazard checks around all field areas. Repair shale pathways as required. Conduct minor repairs to batting cages, bleachers, fencing, and related infrastructure.
  • Parks & Grounds Maintenance: Perform general groundskeeping duties, including mowing, trimming, and litter removal. Support tree care and horticultural maintenance under staff direction. Complete minor painting tasks and basic repairs to amenities and fixtures. Carry out campsite cleaning and other park maintenance duties as assigned. Support Town of Devon events through setup, cleanup or operational assistance.
  • Equipment Operation & Care: Safely operate motorized and manual equipment, including string trimmers, push mowers, roto tillers, water pumps, leaf blowers, cordless drills, and other power tools. Hand tools such as rakes, shovels, hammers, wrenches. Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic mechanical checks, including monitoring fuel, oil, and fluid levels. Follow all safety procedures for handling and storing equipment. Inspect, identify, and report worksite hazards in accordance with provided training and provincial safety regulations. Work safely with WHMIS-controlled substances; WHMIS knowledge is an asset. Assist with insect and pest control activities under supervision. Maintain clean and safe work areas, addressing hazards promptly.
  • Customer Service & Public Interaction: Interact politely and positively with park users, sport groups, and the general public. Provide support during special events by helping with logistics, site preparation, and cleanup. Represent the Town of Devon in a professional and courteous manner at all times.

Qualifications

  • Specialized Skills/Knowledge: Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Comfortable using both manual and power tools and learning new equipment. Strong attention to detail, especially related to field safety and playability standards. Ability to follow direction, work independently, and collaborate with the Parks team. Basic mechanical understanding for equipment checks and troubleshooting.
  • Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Experience in parks maintenance, groundskeeping, sport field preparation, or outdoor labour considered an asset. Valid Class 5 driver’s license, with the ability to drive Town vehicles as required.

Working Conditions: Daily outdoor work in all weather conditions, including significant exposure to grass, pollen, flowers, dust, and other natural allergens. Regular physical activity including lifting, bending, digging, and extended periods of walking or standing. Operation of motorized and manual equipment.
