Job summary
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Clinical Coding & Data Quality Supervisor to join a busy NHS clinical coding and data quality team in Croydon.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and mentoring Clinical Coders and Data Quality Officers, ensuring accurate and consistent clinical coding and supporting the delivery of high-quality patient activity data within required deadlines.
Key responsibilities
- Supervise, support and mentor Clinical Coders and Data Quality Officers, including supporting training and development.
- Extract, interpret and accurately code clinical information using ICD-10 and OPCS classifications.
- Ensure patient activity is coded accurately and within national and organisational deadlines.
- Support clinical coding audits, validation exercises and the identification of training and development needs.
- Investigate and resolve clinical coding and data quality queries and issues.
- Work closely with clinicians, clerical staff and other stakeholders to resolve outstanding coding and data quality issues.
- Support the development and implementation of clinical coding and data quality processes and procedures.
- Monitor data quality and assist with data correction using relevant reports and dashboards.
- Provide guidance on outpatient coding and support improved data capture.
- Ensure compliance with clinical coding standards, Information Governance and relevant data protection requirements.
- Attend relevant meetings, training and development sessions as required.
- Undertake other reasonable duties in line with the requirements of the service.
- National Clinical Coding qualification (ACC).
- Minimum 5 years’ post-ACC clinical coding experience across a broad range of specialities.
- Recent NHS clinical coding experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of clinical coding rules and classifications, including ICD-10 and OPCS.
- Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, coding theory and medical terminology.
- Experience of identifying and resolving clinical coding and data quality issues.
- Understanding of outpatient coding and its importance to revenue and data quality.
- Experience supervising and mentoring clinical coders, including trainees.
- Ability to work accurately under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Strong analytical, communication and teamwork skills.
- Good understanding of patient confidentiality and data protection requirements.
- Medical degree or science background.
- Understanding of HRGs and financial flows.
- Experience supporting clinical coding audits and data quality improvement initiatives.
