The post holder will provide senior medical leadership and high-quality psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients under their care. As an Approved Clinician (AC) and Section 12 approved doctor, the Consultant Psychiatrist will exercise statutory responsibilities under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and contribute to safe, effective, and patient-centred services in line with national guidance and organisational policies.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients within the designated service (General Adult, Forensic, or Community available).
- Act as Responsible Clinician (RC) and Approved Clinician (AC) under the Mental Health Act where appropriate.
- Undertake Mental Health Act assessments, reports, and reviews, including tribunals and managers hearings.
- Lead the development, implementation, and review of individualised care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
- Ensure safe prescribing and monitoring of psychotropic medication in line with best practice and NICE guidance.
- Provide specialist advice and consultation to colleagues, partner agencies, and external stakeholders.
- Participate in on-call rotas as required.
Leadership and Management
- Provide clinical leadership within the MDT, promoting high standards of care, professionalism, and collaborative working.
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives, and pathway redesign.
- Support effective risk assessment and risk management processes.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, and service evaluation activities.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Full registration with the GMC and licence to practise.
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Psychiatry (or CESR equivalent).
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Psychiatry.
- Approved Clinician (AC) status.
- Section 12(2) approval under the Mental Health Act.
- Demonstrable experience at consultant or senior specialty doctor level in the relevant psychiatric specialty.
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Commitment to multidisciplinary and patient-centred care.
Desirable Criteria
- Additional postgraduate qualifications or higher degrees.
- Experience in service development or clinical leadership roles.
- Interest or experience in research, audit, or teaching.
