Infrastructure Engineer
Newton Abbot | £42,000 £47,000 | Office-based
If youre an experienced Infrastructure Engineer who enjoys being hands-on with the technology you support, solving complex problems and getting involved in infrastructure improvements and projects, this could be an interesting next move.
Were recruiting for a well-established business in Newton Abbot looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to join its IT Operations team.
This is an office-based role, working as part of the team on-site in Newton Abbot. Youll have exposure to a broad, business-critical technology environment, combining day-to-day infrastructure support with improvement work and wider technical projects.
Its a varied position where youll be able to troubleshoot complex issues, improve resilience and performance, and contribute to how the infrastructure develops.
What youll be doing
Your day-to-day work will include:
- Supporting and maintaining server, network and infrastructure environments
- Administering Windows Server and Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online
- Supporting VMware and/or Hyper-V virtual environments
- Working with networking technologies including VLANs and VPNs
- Supporting infrastructure across on-premise, hosted and Azure environments
- Monitoring performance, availability and capacity and identifying potential issues before they become problems
- Managing patching and supporting infrastructure security
- Troubleshooting more complex infrastructure issues as a 2nd/3rd line escalation point
- Using PowerShell to improve and automate administration
- Working with third-party and hosting providers
- Testing and implementing infrastructure, hardware and software changes
- Contributing to infrastructure improvements and wider technical projects
- Keeping technical documentation up to date
What were looking for
Youll need a good grounding in infrastructure and experience supporting a business-critical IT environment.

- Windows Server
- VMware and/or Hyper-V
- Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online
- Networking, including VLANs and VPNs
- PowerShell
- Azure
- SAN/storage technologies
- Infrastructure monitoring, security and patching
You dont need to have worked with every technology on the list. Were more interested in strong infrastructure fundamentals, good troubleshooting skills and someone who understands how the different parts of an environment fit together.
Experience with Cisco Meraki or HP networking would be useful, as would exposure to Linux/Unix, DevOps, ITIL or infrastructure project delivery.
Youll suit the role if you enjoy being hands-on, solving problems and taking ownership. Youll be working as part of a team, so being able to communicate clearly, share knowledge and manage competing priorities will be just as important as the technology.
