The post holder will be responsible for providing a high standard of evidence-based care to patients throughout their operative journey, within the guidelines of the Trust, the HCPC and the NMC. The post holder will provide support and guidance to the theatre team within the clinical area, and will assist with the training and development of junior staff and students. As a member of the team, participates in establishing a positive working environment in which patients receive a high standard of care delivery.

Personally deliver a high standard of care to patients and participate in assessing, planning and evaluation of individualised patient care. Act as a clinical role model at all times. Ensure that all patients are cared for in a safe environment and maintains the safety and well-being of patients, staff and visitors in line with Health and Safety guidelines. Personally acts within and ensures adherence to all Trust and Departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the care, custody and administration of medicines in accordance with Trust and local policy.
  • Ensure workload of colleagues does not jeopardise safe standards of practice and initiate action if necessary.
  • Participate in the daily checking and maintenance of essential equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and legible records of all clinical and legal documentation to include accident / incident reporting, with regard to HCPC/NMC statutory and Trust policies.
  • Liaise with all members of the multi-professional team to ensure that care is assessed, planned, delivered and evaluated within a multi-professional framework, in the interests of the patient, and that care is communicated to all team members.
  • Engage with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives and participate in related programmes and events to support a culture of engagement.
  • Contribute to improving representation and access within the workforce, including ongoing recruitment and development activities as part of EDI initiatives.
  • Assist in the investigation of nursing aspects of complaints, accidents and clinical incidents and be involved in corrective action with guidance, reporting serious incidents in line with Trust policy.
  • Ensure policies and procedures (including EC Directives, Health and Safety at work, COSHH and Moving and Handling) are adhered to.
  • Ensure equipment and supplies in the clinical area are maintained and checked to enable practitioners to deliver care efficiently and safely.
  • Support research and development, education and training; assist in creating an environment conducive to learning and development; provide clinical supervision and practice supervision for staff and learners.
  • Keep staff up-to-date with new developments and encourage ongoing education and exchange of information, ideas and experiences.
  • Take responsibility for own professional development in conjunction with the Theatre & Recovery Co-ordinator and Practice Development Facilitator.
  • Maintain current knowledge of operating theatre practice, participate in quality assurance tools, and engage in clinical audit to improve care.
  • Participate in trials of new equipment and supplies and, where appropriate, clinical research trials for patients in the clinical areas, liaising with relevant healthcare professionals.
  • Work with Senior Theatre Practitioners and Theatre & Recovery Co-ordinator to manage the clinical area, and assist in leading the theatre team where applicable.
  • Be aware of NHS financial pressures and contribute to prudent use of equipment and avoidance of waste.
  • Establish effective communication with Senior Theatre Practitioners and Theatre & Recovery Co-ordinator to resolve complex or sensitive situations; recognise barriers to communication and respond with tact and reassurance.
  • Represent the Division and clinical area, attend relevant meetings, and contribute to service improvement discussions.
  • Access effective clinical supervision for personal reflection and development of staff, ensure current HCPC/NMC registration at all times, and maintain accurate recording of patient/nursing data.

The post holder may be required to work at any of the Trust's sites in line with service needs and must work flexibly, including rotating between theatres.
