We have an exciting opportunity for an Oncology Nurse Educator to join the team at Lewisham & Greenwich Trust. The post holder will work across two hospital sites, providing direct clinical support and delivering teaching and educational programmes for inpatient wards and day units.

Main duties of the job:

  • Training and maintenance of SACT skills to ensure the delivery of patient‑focused, evidence‑based care.
  • Implementation of structured pre‑SACT consultations for inpatient ward areas.
  • Management of deteriorating patients.
  • Medication/SACT incidents.
  • New staff induction.
  • Communication skills, communicating with compassion & sensitivity.
  • Acute Oncology/telephone triage.

Key Result Areas & Performance:

The successful candidate will lead in the development of nursing staff through the creation and implementation of relevant education and clinical skills training, designing and maintaining programmes that facilitate acquisition of necessary skills, knowledge and competency in haemato‑oncology & SACT. They will continue to implement the UKONS SACT passport and ensure all training and education is mapped to the ACCEND framework.

  • Involving the multi‑professional team in planning and delivery of coaching, teaching, supervision and assessment.

  • Using a variety of methods (e.g., simulation, technology‑enhanced learning) to deliver education, adjusting to learner needs, preferences and neuro‑diversity.

Clinical Practice:

  • Contribute to clinical practice by working alongside learners delivering care, both planned and emergent.
  • Use coaching/mentoring techniques to identify learning needs, improve standards, generate learning plans, and respond to concerns.
  • Demonstrate and promote high standards of person‑centred, holistic care.
  • Support clinical team leaders in monitoring documentation standards.
  • Advocate for patients’ interests and well‑being through effective communication.
  • Maintain competence in administering SACT.

Leadership & Management:

  • Participate in appraisal and demonstrate professional practice and scope.
  • Build strong relationships across local, divisional, trust‑wide and external networks.
  • Act as a role model and mentor, demonstrating lifelong learning.
  • Collate yearly training needs analysis and forecast education expenditure.
  • Investigate medication/SACT incidents and formulate action plans.
  • Provide input to appraisal and personal development plans of colleagues.

Audit and Evaluation: Innovation:

  • Audit and document educational progress using effective feedback strategies.
  • Implement patient experience initiatives based on feedback.
  • Benchmarks SACT standards against peers.
  • Identify and address risk and quality issues through governance structures.
  • Coordinate ongoing service review and evaluation; monitor patient experience and outcomes.
  • Present findings at conferences and in professional publications.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Registered general nurse.
  • ENB 998 or equivalent Mentorship qualification.
  • Systemic Anti‑Cancer Therapy (SACT) qualification and training.
  • Minimum of five years post‑registration experience, including 2 years at Band 6 with leadership and management experience.
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of current nursing issues.
  • Experience working with patients with haematological and solid tumours.
  • Experience with deteriorating patients.
  • Ability to lead, manage change and motivate staff.
  • Ability to produce reports and participate in management meetings.
  • Audit and analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of SACT treatment and supportive care for haematological and solid tumours.

Desirable:

  • Masters level qualification or evidence of continuing professional development to masters level.
  • Advanced Clinical Assessment skills or willingness to undertake.
  • 3 years post‑registration experience caring for SACT patients.
  • Experience working in a teaching environment.
  • Experience in service development and change management.
  • Experience presenting for large groups or conferences.
  • Knowledge of national policy and drivers for chemotherapy services.
  • Evidence of involvement in Peer Review process or GIRFT.
