The role of the Mental Health Well-Being Practitioner as a member of the team is to provide specialist nursing care to patients with mental health conditions or patients experiencing psychological distress. Deliver therapeutic interventions that will reduce agitation and distress and promote recovery. To identify factors that increase and decrease agitation/distress for the patient. To always deliver care according to the principles of least restriction. Carrying out assigned tasks as part of clinical team in support of registered nurses and to undertake some aspects of care provision without direct supervision. Ensuring the safety and well-being of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centered care principles.
Main duties of the job include:
- Working with patients admitted to the Emergency Department and Inpatient wards.
- Delivering a high standard of evidence-based care and treatment in order to maximise each patient's individual potential.
- Responsible for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of care to patients and families presenting to Emergency Department and admitted to the wards in conjunction with the Psychiatric Liaison Team.
- Delivering care that has already been planned by a clinician or a Registered Nurse.
- Contributing to the efficient running of the department and ensuring patients and their families are seen in a timely manner.
Job responsibilities include:
- Therapeutically engaging with patients who have a mental health condition or are experiencing psychological distress.
- Delivering care in accordance with the principles of least restriction and in line with national guidance including NICE guidelines for managing disturbed behaviour.
- Understanding continuous risk assessment of patient and escalating any increase in risk.
- Identifying when patients are experiencing anxiety/distress and therapeutically engaging with them to alleviate these symptoms.
- Acting as an advocate for patients within the department.
- Providing support and assistance to professionals in the implementation of plans of care for individual patients.
Essential qualifications include:
- Good level of general education including GCSE English and Maths.
- NVQ level 4 or Foundation Degree/Degree in a healthcare related subject.
Essential previous experience includes:
- Minimum 6 months experience in acute hospital setting or clinic.
- Previous experience of working with patients with mental health conditions.
- Experience of taking clinical observations and customer care experience.
Essential skills/knowledge/ability include:
- Knowledge of mental health conditions and therapeutic interventions.
- Able to interact well with multidisciplinary team and patients/relatives.
- Punctual and reliable.
