Our Emergency Department sees in excess of 90,000 adult patients per year. The role requires a clinical expert in ED nursing who can lead, manage, guide and direct staff within a fast‑paced environment. The Charge Nurse works closely with the senior sister/charge nurse, ensuring all activities align with Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust policy, the Trust’s Vision and Philosophy for Nursing, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct and national improvement initiatives such as the 4‑hour target, NHS Plan, National Service Frameworks, Essence of Care and clinical governance.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist the department senior sister/charge nurse in prioritising patient care and staffing requirements.
  • Actively manage the 4‑hour target and enforce it across the department.
  • Assume designated responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the unit.
  • Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and the public.
  • Be familiar with Trust policies (Fire, Violence, Major Incident, Bomb Alert) and coordinate when required.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection Act and the Coldicott Guidelines.
  • Assist in the effective use of resources and monitor standards of quality nursing care.
  • Communicate effectively within the department at all times.
  • Handle and report complaints made by patients and members of the public, following Trust policy, and provide feedback to the manager as necessary.

Person Specification – Essential

  • Registered General Nurse (RGN).
  • Completion of an Emergency Nursing course.
  • Evidence of career development.
  • Currently working in ED or relevant ED experience.
  • Significant Band 5 experience in ED.
  • Experience in department management.
  • Experience working with or facilitating students and junior staff.
  • Knowledge of nursing in a relevant clinical setting.
  • Familiarity with the NMC Code of Conduct and Clinical Governance.
  • Ability to care for the ill in a variety of clinical settings.
  • Knowledge of nursing models.
