My client is an award-winning, established, successful, fast-growing and ambitious specialist Mortgage Lender. The company's main aim is to enable its clientele to secure the mortgage for their property that they desire, whilst providing them with the very best level of service. Due to successful business growth, the company is currently keen to hire an employed Mortgage Underwriting Manager.

Within this position, the Manager will lead a team of Mortgage Underwriters that underwrite often complex/specialist cases, which are often manually underwritten. Following on from a strong 2025 performance, the lender aims to increase the amount lent last year by another 50% during 2026. This is a hybrid role whereby the successful candidate would work from a Central London-based office on a three days per week basis and have the opportunity to work from home remotely on two days per week. Alternatively, if you would like to work from an office on a more regular basis, this will be suitably arranged. This is a Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm based role, with no Saturday work being required.

Key role features include:

  • Leading, motivating and influencing the team to exceed expectations.
  • Driving a high-performance culture where team members achieve results beyond their perceived limits.
  • Completing quarterly and annual reviews with your team members.
  • Being responsible for commercial and operational leadership, including allocating cases, managing daily workflow, monitoring SLAs, whilst focusing on efficiency and resolving any operational issues.
  • Overseeing the full lifecycle of mortgage cases from intake to offer, ensuring accuracy and timely results.
  • Performance management & development; successfully leading, coaching and mentoring the underwriting team.
  • Effectively managing the lender's relationships with Mortgage Brokers and your team’s relationships in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • First line Quality Assurance, completing checks, analysing cases and implementing improvements to enhance underwriting quality and reduce risks.
  • Risk, Compliance and Controls management, contributing to ensure that all underwriting processes are effective and efficient.

Key candidate attributes:

  • Proven Mortgage Underwriting management/leadership experience is essential (preferably with additional underwriting experience with specialist/complex residential, BTL, later life and/or equity release mortgage cases).
  • You must hold/have held a mortgage underwriting mandate of at least £500,000.
  • You must be prepared/available to work from a Central London-based office on a 3 days per week basis.
  • Excellent communication skills (both English written and verbal).
  • Strong organisation and time management skills.
  • My client is keen to hire a candidate who is ambitious, keen to continue to develop their career, whilst also being a team player.

The successful candidate will receive a competitive starting basic salary of circa £60,000 to £75,000, plus a potential annual bonus of up to 10% (linked to both your and the business's performance). In addition to this, you will receive several employee benefits including Growth Shares (a stake in the company), 30 days holiday per annum (plus the bank holidays), a Health Cash Plan, a Pension Scheme and an Employee Wellbeing Calendar (focused on supporting the mental, physical and financial wellbeing of all employees).
