You will deliver therapy programmes and work closely with families, education staff and other professionals, empowering them to support confident, person-centred communication and help children and young people who stammer achieve their goals.

Main duties of the job

We work collaboratively with families, schools and communities to empower children and young people to communicate effectively, participate fully and develop the confidence and independence needed to succeed in life.

Main Duties

• Assess, diagnose and provide specialist intervention for children and young people who stammer or are at risk of stammering.
• Work closely with families, education staff and health professionals to support confident, person-centred communication.
• Use evidence-based approaches, including recognised specialist programmes such as Palin Parent-Child Interaction Therapy where appropriate.
• Provide advice, training and clinical support to promote understanding of stammering across the childs environments.
• Monitor outcomes and coordinate care across the service to ensure smooth, effective support for each child or young person.

This is a permanent post and is for 7.5 hours (1 day) per week.

You will be based at Hollyfield House.

• Of a range of recognised specialist programmes for this client group and age range. (e.g. PCI, Solution focused brief therapy)
• Of additional counselling skills to support clients and their families with the large psychological aspect of this communication difficulty
• Of clinical decision making explicitly for the most unique (complex) cases
• Of how to support others in their clinical decision making in their own work with children and young people who experience Stammering
• In-depth knowledge of national policies and procedures (relevant to the specialist client group)
• In depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to the client group) and an ability to compare relative benefits
• In depth knowledge of the principles of clinical governance /audit
• Understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group)
• Knowledge of standards of record keeping

Qualifications

Essential

• Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification
• Health Professions Council Licence to Practice
• Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist
• Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to post graduate equivalent
• Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks

Experience

Essential

• In-depth experience within specialist area
• Experience of working with children who experience a wide range of communication difficulties
• Extensive experience of working with families using programmes such as PPCI/ Hanen
• Experience of running groups
• Previous experience of supervision/ mentoring other SALTs

Desirable

• Experience of using Coaching
• Using the RCSLT SaLTA framework
