South London Coroner’s Court – Coroner’s Officer (4 posts)
Grade: 9 (£40,755 to £42,324)
Location: South London Coroner’s Court, Davis House, Robert Street, Croydon, CR0 1QQ. This role is Court-based and there are no opportunities for home working.
Hours per week : 36 per week, though applications for job-sharing and part-time working are encouraged.
Contract type: Fixed term for 12 months with scope to extend.
About South London Coroner’s Court
Coroners investigate certain deaths in their jurisdiction that are deemed to be unnatural, violent, or where the cause is unknown. The South London Coroner’s Court serves the four London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Croydon and Sutton, and Croydon Council is the lead authority and responsible for providing resources and staffing to support the Coroner’s and the running of the court.
About the role
Could you help support the South London Coroner’s Court to deliver its judicial duties in a role where no two days are the same? We are seeking to recruit Coroner’s Officers to supplement the current cohort, into this fast paced and diverse role in the South London Coroner’s Court.
As a Coroner’s Officer you will play a key role in assisting the Coroner’s in fulfilling their statutory duties with regards to the investigation of deaths from initial referral through to the end of the investigation. You will communicate directly with bereaved families, legal representatives and witnesses to provide advice and guidance in respect of coronial proceedings, and you will manage a personal caseload of referrals and/or inquests including complex and sensitive cases.
Your excellent customer service and communication skills will tie in with your ability to relate to people from backgrounds reflecting the diversity of the people who live across South London.
We are looking for people who can make a difference to the lives of people who have lost family members, loved ones or friends. This role requires the ability to deliver important services compassionately, whilst being personally emotionally resilient when dealing with residents at a very difficult time in their lives.
We are looking for someone with:
- E xcellent IT skills
- Ability to write accurate and concise reports in a legal setting
- Sound judgement and the ability to reach balanced, unbiased decision
- Able to respond positively to a rapidly changing pattern of demand which can be unpredictable and unplanned requiring constant shifts of priority
- Ability to be professionally dissociated from the emotional aspects of dealing with deaths on a daily basis
- Ability to establish positive and effective working relationships with a range of professional people in a sensitive, caring and tactful manner
