Deputy Head of Lighting
Responsible to:Head of Lighting
Term:Permanent
Salary:£30,500 per annum plus overtime
Hours: The weekly salary is inclusive of hours worked between 9am – 11pm daily up to 43 hours per week, spread over 6 days. Hours outside of these parameters including Sundays and Bank holidays will be paid at the appropriate overtime rate

Holiday: 25 days per annum.
3 days per annum can be specified as annual leave by Young Vic management.
Probationary period: 3 months
Notice period:1 month for either party during probationary period, 2 months thereafter.
The Production Department:
The purpose of the Production Department is to oversee and deliver all the technical elements of the Young Vic’s programme – this includes our productions, projects and events, in the main house, studios, digital ‘stages’, and across the creative engagement and talent development departments.
Members of the Production Department work collaboratively together to realise the full potential of our productions and our company, by building and maintaining strong relationships with freelance and in-house creative teams and other artistic personnel. This includes developing and evolving an inclusive, accessible and innovative culture, committed to our journey towards becoming an actively anti-racist organisation.
Key Objective:
To work collaboratively as part of the Production Department in achieving the highest standards in the delivery of technical requirements for Young Vic Productions and related projects. The successful candidate, whilst working primarily in the area of lighting, will demonstrate an ability and willingness to work on occasions alongside colleagues in other areas within the team.
Job Description
Deputy Head of Lighting

Responsible for:Lighting Technician and Studio Technician in conjunction with the Head of Lighting
Freelance and casual lighting operators and technicians.
Key Objective:To take responsibility for the delivery and management of lighting requirements for Young Vic productions and related projects both at the Young Vic and elsewhere.
To contribute to the creation of the highest standards in all the theatre’s producing work.
Departmental Responsibilities:
- To actively contribute to the effective operation of the Production Department’s work.
- To support the Head of Lighting in the effective planning and management of light operations.
- To participate in the recruitment and management of casual lighting technicians and show operators.
- To personally and with other staff ensure compliance with all Health & Safety procedures and statutory regulations.
- To participate in department administrative and HR systems as required.
- To take an active role in the maintenance of the theatre’s technical equipment and infrastructure.
- To support the Head of Lighting in conjunction with the Head of Sound & Production Manager with planning and supervising video requirements on productions.
Production Responsibilities:
- To deputise for the Head of Lighting in periods of absence or as required.
- To take lead responsibility for the delivery of lighting elements of productions as required.
- To assist the Head of Lighting in realising lighting designs for productions and related projects.
- To programme lighting desks in all spaces where required.
- To operate lighting desks in all spaces as requested.
- Provide show cover, as required for all lighting & video disciplines.
- To provide Duty Tech support for productions, as required.
- On occasion to act as Lighting Designer for our Taking Part and Development Departments, and the Directors Program, as required.
- Keep up to date with current lighting technology, and to remain current with industry best practice.
- In liaison with the Head of Lighting, provide technical support and management for the work of other departments, including the Taking Part and Development Departments, and the Directors Program, as required.
Budget Holding:
- To be responsible for managing the lighting stock and maintenance budgets, in liaison with the Head of Lighting, as required.
- To monitor casual lighting staff and production budgets, as required.
General:
- To ensure that lighting infrastructure throughout the building is in a good working order.
- Any other reasonable duties required to assist the Production Department or the Young Vic operation as a whole.
- To uphold and embody the Young Vic’s company policies, including but not limited to our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy, Dignity at Work policy and Health and Safety policy.
- To actively participate in and support the work experience programme of the Young Vic.
- To be an active and supportive member of the Young Vic staff team.

Person Specification
Deputy Head of Lighting
Essential Skills:
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of theatrical lighting equipment and infrastructure.
- Demonstrable experience of working in a professional theatre or performing arts environment, and an understanding of modern theatre production techniques.
- A good working knowledge of ETC EOS/ION lighting consoles and networks.
- Leadership skills and the ability to manage a team.
- Ability to be creative and resourceful in problem solving.
- Ability to work well within a small dedicated production team.
- Ability to work with and support all other departments.
- Ability to remain calm, positive and professional when working under pressure.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- An experience of and being at ease with working at height including harness work (training will be supplied as necessary).
- Electrical Health and Safety knowledge.
- CAD skills (preferably in Vectorworks) and ability to produce paperwork relevant to a production.
- Skills relevant to the construction of lighting practicals and set installations.
Desirable Skills:
- Good programming skills on ETC consoles, including experience of programming consoles for productions.
- Experience in working for a lighting department in a producing theatre.
- A working knowledge of video equipment and its operation.
- Computer literate on all MS Office applications.
- Enthusiasm and an interest in the Arts.
First aid training.
