Joining us in Croydon and Brent, you are part of busy teams working on exciting projects. From delivering English mentoring and organizing day trips to the zoo, to supporting our fundraising efforts and assisting caseworkers, there are many ways you can contribute to young people’s well-being.

Thank you for dedicating your time and skills to our mission.

We are seeking volunteers interested in working with young asylum seekers and refugees to support our weekly youth club in Croydon, ‘Merhaba’. Merhaba Youth Club is a safe space where 18-25 year old refugees and asylum seekers living in contingency accommodation can socialise, develop friendships, understand their rights and entitlements, gain new skills, and access 1:1 support. The club runs on Tuesdays from 2.30-4.30pm, and we ask volunteers to attend at least three times a month for the entire session. The role involves supporting staff in setting up and delivering activities, including 1:1 English and games, as well as providing administrative support.

We are also looking for volunteers for our weekly Hub in Brent. The Hub is a space where 11-25 year old refugees and asylum seekers come to play sports like football and cricket and seek support with various issues. It operates in Willesden every Wednesday from 4.45pm to 8pm.

The role will be flexible, involving activities such as sports, board games, English classes, or reception duties, providing a chance to get involved in different areas.

Additionally, we need volunteers for our weekly Youth Club in Croydon, which is a space for 11-25-year-old asylum seekers and refugees to access advice on housing, immigration, health, and participate in youth activities and workshops. This club takes place every Thursday from 4:30pm to 8pm in East Croydon.

The primary role is to support the youth development team with setting up and delivering activities. Volunteers are expected to attend twice a month for the full session.

If this does not match your interests, please email us at london@youngroots.org.uk to express your interest in volunteering.

Here’s what some volunteers say:

I volunteer with Young Roots to let young asylum seekers and refugees know they are welcome in this country. During the pandemic, Young Roots adapted quickly to provide online support and social events, including weekly mentoring sessions where I partner with a young person for 10 weeks to practice English. The young people\’s commitment and positivity inspire me and give me hope for the future.” — Catriona McNeish, Croydon Advice and Support Hub Volunteer

I first joined Young Roots as an intern in 2015 while studying for my Master’s in International Cooperation, and served as Croydon’s Project Coordinator from 2018 to 2021. Young Roots provides safe spaces where young people can share their ideas and concerns. I’ve learned a lot about the needs and struggles of young refugees and now enjoy volunteering in the Fundraising team, helping raise funds to support these vital services.
