Young Minds Matter is an exciting, young, expanding registered mental health charity for young people that provides free mentoring to local Secondary and Primary school students. Our services are highly valued in the community and there is a huge demand for our services. We are looking for a Designated Safeguarding Lead to join our charity, who has significant experience in safeguarding young people within an institutional setting such as a school.
What are we looking for?
We are looking to appoint a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) to strengthen our safeguarding work across the charity. We want this recruitment to bring fresh experience and perspectives to our team. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, including those with lived experience. We embrace inclusivity, diversity and equality, and we are committed to building a team with a mix of backgrounds, skills and views.
This role will work closely with our senior leadership and Trustees to make sure we meet our safeguarding duties and maintain best practice. The DSL will also work with our mentors to help advise on the best course of action when responding to any safeguarding concerns or incidents.
The successful candidate will bring clear experience and knowledge in safeguarding and be able to demonstrate:
At least two years experience in a senior safeguarding role for children
Understanding and experience of safeguarding children and young people within the school environment
Successfully working within a team at leadership level
The duties of the DSL will include:
Consider the organisation’s strategic plans and make sure they reflect safeguarding legislation, regulations specific to our activities, statutory guidance, and the safeguarding expectations of the Charities Commission.
Oversee any SEAs (Serious Event Analysis) or Incident Forms and liaise with the appropriate parties both within YMM and with the schools/third party referral organisations to advise appropriate action if any, and then sign off any incidents or causes for concern.
Work with the Trustees to regularly review whether the processes the organisation has put in place are creating a safer culture and keeping young people safe.
Instigate and maintain Effective policy and Practice
Make sure there is an annual review of safeguarding policies and procedures and that this is reported to trustees.
Call for audits of qualitative and quantitative data (either internal or external) when they’re needed.
Learn from case reviews locally and nationally, to improve YMM’s policies, procedures and practices.
Oversee safeguarding allegations against staff or volunteers, together with relevant Trustees
Be a point of contact for if someone wishes to complain about a lack of action in relation to safeguarding concerns.
Promote and safeguard the values of the charity
What difference will you make?
There is huge demand for our services, which we provide free of charge for students. Young people are facing more challenges than ever, especially as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, lockdowns and school closures. Too often they cannot get the support they need through their school or other services. We want to reach as many young people as possible, and we need people who can help us make this happen.
The Designated Safeguarding Lead plays a key part in making sure our service is safe, effective and trusted by young people, families and schools. By supporting our safeguarding work, the DSL will help us provide free mentoring for more students across Warwickshire and, in time, more areas.
YMM gives staff and volunteers the chance to be part of an accessible service that is in high demand from young people. As our DSL, you will help protect and support young people who might not otherwise be able to get the help they need because of gaps in provision in schools.
We hope to grow our reach across the Midlands and beyond, so that no young person is left without help because of financial barriers. Our close-knit, passionate and supportive team works together to deliver the charity’s vision and values. Working with YMM is fulfilling, rewarding and, most importantly, makes a difference to young people’s lives.
