The Role:
We are seeking a top-performing, smart and motivated individual to join our legal team in London. You will work with the legal team and the wider company to deliver growth against ambitious targets (>doubling each year) and support YouLend’s business in the UK, US and Europe.
If you have 7+ years of PQE with foundational skills built in private practice at a top law firm in the UK or EU, along with experience working in-house at a fintech or in the payments / financial services industry, this could be a great opportunity for you. Given the senior nature of the role, it is pivotal that you possess the requisite experience and initiative to hit the ground running right away and step into a management role.
The role is varied and will require you to apply your capabilities across product, tech, capital, commercial, regulatory, project management and stakeholder management. This position offers the opportunity to play a leadership role within the legal team and potentially assume a “Head of” role in the future (contingent on strong performance).
Requirements
You will be:
- Working closely with legal, commercial, product and other business teams to launch new products and features, find innovative and business friendly solutions, and lead on geographic expansions.
- Working closely with the commercial team and leading negotiations of major partnerships for YouLend, including participating in the RFP process and negotiating term sheets.
- Drafting bespoke partnership agreements, including some with capital-infused elements. Some of YouLend’s partners include Amazon, Dojo, eBay, Mollie, Paysafe, and Shopify.
- Overseeing and leading projects originated both inside and outside of the legal team, with a particular focus on the UK and our EU markets.
- Helping supervise, develop and manage junior members of the legal team.
- Creating and leading training sessions on important legal developments and/or projects for the business.
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a wide variety of agreements and other legal documents.
- Providing strategic legal advice to all arms of the business, including the C-suite, commercial team, product team, etc.
- Managing external counsel across jurisdictions to ensure YouLend’s regulatory compliance.
You have:
- 7+ years of professional experience as a transactional lawyer in the UK or EU, preferably consisting of (a) 3-4+ years of experience at a top-tier law firm, and (b) 2-4+ years in-house at a fintech start up or scale-up and/or payments company.
- Ability to oversee and take ownership of projects independently with minimal supervision or ramp-up period.
- Ability to delegate effectively and manage junior members of the team.
- Willingness to serve as a resource for junior members of the team – e.g. holding weekly one-to-one sessions, answering impromptu questions and requests for guidance, etc.
- Desire to work across multiple jurisdictions.
- Exposure to a broad range of commercial and technology law issues and experience across a range of commercial contracts.
- Desire for a broad variety of work rather than focus in a specific area of law.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills / experience, driven by a business-oriented approach to legal practice.
The following would be useful:
- Commercial, transactional, regulatory and product work experience in B2B lending and/or payments.
- Experience working on debt financing / securitisations / other capital markets transactions.
- Fluency in languages other than English (e.g. French, German, Spanish, etc.)
- Experience working with international and multicultural teams.
