Location: We are currently looking to recruit a Trade Effluent Sampling Officer to work within our Asset Management department at Yorkshire Water and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers. The role will cover the East Yorkshire region, operating in and around the Hull area and East coast, therefore you must live within a reasonable commuting distance of the area. However, there will be an expectation an element of your time will be spent working across the Yorkshire region, for team meetings, investigations and site visits.

Working type: This is a permanent opportunity, working 37 hours a week, Monday to Friday. Please note flexibility is required for this role as there is some weekend and out of hours working required at times.

What we do: Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it's so much more than this. We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire's water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region and play a key role in the region's health, wellbeing, and prosperity. New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. Asset Management are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.

The Trade Effluent Sampling Officer role is an amazing opportunity for the right person to provide a positive difference to our wastewater colleagues, the public and environmental health, whilst developing personally and professionally with opportunities to progress both in team and the wider company. The Trade Effluent Sampling Officer will join a small, diverse, and dedicated team conducting inspections and sampling of industrial waste entering the public sewer network across the Yorkshire Water catchment. The purpose of the role is to protect Yorkshire Water's wastewater assets, the environment, and people, whilst continually keeping bills contemporary for business customers. To achieve this, you'll conduct sampling of Trade Effluents on a variety of industrial sites throughout the region, and as necessary, within the public sewer network if working within an investigative capacity- tracing contaminants/pollutants through the network and back to source.

Where you fit in: As our Trade Effluent Sampling Officer, you will sample and inspect these industrial discharges against pre-defined parameters and legislation, thus forming a key component of Yorkshire Water's risk management and corporate strategy, to ensure its own compliance with its regulators. You will generate data that will be used as evidence towards enforcement action if a trader is found to be in breach of key pieces of legislation, which can result in a Formal Legal Caution and or prosecution against the offending party. As such, you will also be called upon to act as a professional witness as necessary, typically through the generation of witness statements with the support of our legal team. On occasion, this type of enforcement work can bring you into disagreement with external stakeholders, therefore excellent interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills are a prerequisite for this role.

What skills & qualifications you will need:

  • A full valid driving licence is a requirement of this role (with no more than 6 points).
  • Good understanding and use of IT, particularly MS Office along with an aptitude towards company specific systems.
