We have an exciting opportunity for a Manager of VAT to join the Finance and Regulation team at Yorkshire Water and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers. Could this be you?

The Finance and Regulation team are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.


We are seeking a part-time Manager of VAT to join Yorkshire Water’s in-house tax team of five tax professionals. You will report to the Group Tax Manager alongside three other members of the tax team. Those other team members manage corporate tax, employment tax and SAO matters respectively. You will also work day-to-day with members of Yorkshire Water’s Finance Team in managing our VAT position as well as advising the business on VAT issues and changes to legislation as well as representing Yorkshire Water at Water UK with other VAT Managers across the water industry.


Where you fit in!

As our Manager of VAT you will:


• Manage and oversee the submission of the Group’s VAT returns.


• Deal with HMRC VAT and indirect tax enquiries.


• Liaise with external tax advisers.


• Provide VAT and other indirect tax advice to key areas of the business including training where necessary.


• Provide VAT and indirect tax advice in relation to business initiatives in both the regulated and non-regulated businesses.


• Identify and assess VAT and indirect tax opportunities presented to the Group.


• Monitor tax controls and risks of the companies across the Kelda Group and contribute to the improvement of those controls.


• Monitor Customs declarations for the small amount of imports made by the Group.


• Represent Yorkshire Water at the Water UK Indirect Tax forum alongside other water companies’ VAT Managers.


• Assist with Yorkshire Water’s other indirect tax activities including landfill tax and climate change levies.


What skills & qualifications you will need:


• In-depth experience of VAT compliance gained either within a leading firm of accountants or within an in-house tax function.


• experience of working with accounts either hands-on or through professional qualifications.


• Experience of dealing with HMRC in formal written correspondence and also in face to face meetings on complex tax matters.


• Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex concepts and information to both financial and non-financial people.


• Competent user of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.


• Clearly demonstrates the Kelda company values and behaviours.


You will also benefit from having:


• Some previous exposure to indirect taxes other than VAT.


• Some previous exposure to direct taxation.


• Utility or energy sector experience.
