We invite experienced countryside professionals to support Yorkshire Water’s Conservation, Access & Recreation (CAR) team as a Ranger, helping to deliver public safety, access and conservation policies across recreational sites in West Yorkshire, with a focus on Huddersfield, Ripponden and Hebden Bridge.

Location & Work Type

Regionally based, primarily in West Yorkshire. Permanent role, 37 hours per week. Shift pattern provides cover across daylight hours and weekends, with seasonal variation.

As one of the UK’s largest landowners, Yorkshire Water maintains 30,518 hectares of land providing car parks, footpaths, bridleways and recreational opportunities across some of the country’s most iconic countryside.

Responsibilities

  • Support the CAR team’s focus on public safety by monitoring and maintaining sites to a high standard.
  • Organise interpretative activities for visitors.
  • Undertake biodiversity conservation and site maintenance work.
  • Ensure sites are safe and welcoming for all visitors, complying with health and safety requirements.
  • Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications
  • Experience as a park ranger or similar outdoor countryside role.
  • Experience engaging with visitors and the public to manage recreation and conservation sites.
  • Level 5 or higher countryside qualification in management, land, forestry, habitats, rights of way or landscape design.
  • Enjoy working outdoors in all weather and remote locations.
  • Working knowledge of Public Rights of Way legislation.
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements in a countryside setting.
  • Experience in countryside and habitat management.
  • Effective communication skills for diverse audiences, including organising interpretative activities.
  • Self‑motivated, able to work independently or as part of a team and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and processes.
  • Enthusiastic, detail‑oriented and high‑standard approach.
  • Valid full driving licence with no more than six points.
  • Preferred Skills & Experiences
  • Knowledge of health and safety inspections, risk assessment and systematic asset inspection.
  • IT competence in SAP, MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook), GIS.
  • Knowledge of wildlife, highway, countryside, tenancy, Health & Safety and Equality Act legislation.
  • Understanding of catchment management for water quality.
  • Experience in a customer‑facing role.
  • Experience of lone working in an outdoor environment.
  • Qualifications such as NPTC/LANTRA/City & Guilds in tools and machinery use.
