Location

This role will initially be based in Bradford but we’re moving our office to Leeds Valley Park in September 2026, so you’ll be based there in the future.

Work type

Permanent contract, working full time, on average 37 hours per week Monday-Sunday.

You are employed in this role on an annualised hours contract which totals 1929 hours per year, an average of 37 hours per week.

Your normal attendance days and daily hours will be in accordance with the operational shift rota; the rota will be a 24hr / 365-day cover.

As a

Central Product Optimiser - (Waste Networks Desk 24/7) you will play a vital role in the remote monitoring, control and optimisation of Yorkshire Water's wastewater networks and treatment assets.

Working within Central Control, you will help ensure our services remain safe, reliable, compliant and sustainable, supporting both customers and the environment across Yorkshire.

You will use real-time operational data and system intelligence to optimise network performance, improve asset reliability and support the delivery of key environmental and customer performance commitments.

Through effective remote operations, you will help minimise pollution risks, reduce internal and external flooding incidents, maintain bathing water compliance, and strengthen the resilience of our wastewater infrastructure.

Acting as a central point of expertise, you will provide technical support and guidance to Duty Managers and operational teams during incidents, escalations and network constraints, enabling informed decision‑making and coordinated responses across the business.

Working closely with field operations, treatment teams and key stakeholders, you will identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, optimise system flows and enhance overall network performance.

You will also contribute to the development of a Centre of Excellence for wastewater network and treatment optimisation, championing innovation, data‑driven decision making and continuous improvement.

This role is central to delivering smarter, more sustainable ways of working through remote operations, helping Yorkshire Water provide excellent service to customers while protecting the environment for future generations.

Day to day, you'll

• Keep on top of telemetry alarms, SCADA systems and operational events across wastewater networks and treatment assets.
• Monitor and optimise network flows and treatment performance to support operational efficiency, resilience and regulatory compliance.
• Analyse real‑time data, trends and alarms, taking proactive action to prevent failures, pollution incidents and flooding events.
• Respond to operational incidents and escalating issues, ensuring timely intervention and effective resolution in line with governance processes.
• Work closely with field teams, providing clear operational direction and support to ensure Service Level Agreements are achieved.
• Support the management and resolution of pollution incidents, helping to deliver zero Category 1 and 2 pollution events and minimise environmental impact.
• Ensure assets are prepared for planned maintenance and capital investment activities while maintaining service, compliance and customer standards.
• Champion high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance, ensuring all activities are carried out in line with company policies and procedures.
• Collaborate with engineering, process optimisation, asset management and energy teams to identify and implement performance improvements.
• Support the delivery of key performance commitments, including reducing internal and external flooding, achieving zero failing works and maintaining 100% bathing water compliance.
• Act as a trusted operational and technical point of contact within Central Operations, supporting Duty Managers and operational teams during complex or high‑risk events.
• Contribute to the development of Central Operations as a centre of excellence by embracing innovation, challenging existing practices and driving continuous improvement across wastewater operations.

What skills, experience and qualifications you will need

• Confidence in recognising potential wastewater network and treatment performance issues at an early stage, with the judgement to take proactive action and escalates where required to minimise operational, customer and environmental impact.
• Proven experience in incident management, with the ability to respond effectively to pollution risks, asset failures, flooding events and unplanned operational issues, ensuring a safe and controlled recovery.
• A solid understanding of alarm management and operational monitoring systems, with the ability to assess, prioritise and respond to telemetry and SCADA alarms in line with Yorkshire Water policies and procedures.
• Strong analytical and fault‑finding skills, with the ability to interpret operational data, identify trends and diagnose issues across wastewater networks and treatment assets.
• Excellent relationship‑building skills, able to work collaboratively with field teams, operational colleagues, engineers and external stakeholders to support effective decision‑making and service delivery.
• A keen eye for detail and a "right first time" mindset, demonstrating accuracy and sound judgement when making operational decisions that could impact customers, compliance and the environment.
• A good understanding of how the role contributes to Yorkshire Water's wider business plan and Performance Commitments, with the ability to translate objectives into daily operational actions.
• Awareness of business targets, regulatory requirements and performance measures, together with an understanding of how individual contribution supports customer, environmental and operational outcomes.
• The ability to work independently within a self‑managed 24/7 rota, demonstrating resilience, accountability and flexibility as part of a round‑clock operational function.
• Strong communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to explain technical information clearly, coordinate responses, provide updates and escalates concerns when necessary.
• Experience of continuous improvement within an operational, process or utility environment, with a proactive approach to identifying opportunities to improve performance, efficiency and resilience.
• Good IT skills and financial awareness, with the ability to utilise operational systems effectively and understand the wider business impact of operational decisions.

You will also benefit from having

• Experience of working within wastewater, utilities, manufacturing, process industries or other operationally critical environments.
• Knowledge of wastewater network operations, treatment processes and asset performance management principles.
• Understanding of Yorkshire Water's operational, risk management and asset management processes and procedures.
• Familiarity with telemetry, SCADA systems and control room operations used to monitor and optimise asset performance.
• Financial awareness and an understanding of how operational decisions impact efficiency, costs and business performance.
• An understanding of environmental and regulatory requirements, including pollution prevention, compliance obligations and performance commitments within the water industry.
