All you need to know about working as part of the medical crew at Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

HEMS Paramedics

Yorkshire Air Ambulance maintains a close relationship with Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS). All paramedics at Yorkshire Air Ambulance are internally seconded by YAS. Candidates must possess a minimum of 3 years of paramedic experience before considering the post. Following an intensive application and recruitment process, selected paramedics become HEMS paramedics for a period of 2 – 3 years, depending on current circumstances. HEMS paramedics operate autonomously, utilising critical care skills such as administering ketamine, midazolam, blood, magnesium, and calcium. They are trained in advanced medical decision making and performing surgical procedures like thoracotomy. Working alongside a Critical Care Doctor, they form the Yorkshire Critical Care Team.

Critical Care Team Doctors

Operational for 12 hours daily, the Critical Care Team (CCT) is based at the Nostell Air Support Unit. Comprising two HEMS/CCT paramedics and a CCT doctor, the team rapidly reaches critically ill and injured patients across Yorkshire and Humberside. CCT doctors are Consultant level practitioners, primarily working in Emergency Medicine or Anaesthesia and Critical Care. They are seconded to the CCT part-time for two years, with eligibility criteria including at least 5 years of prehospital care experience and the ability to safely deliver prehospital emergency anaesthesia.
