Overview
We are looking for a suitable candidate to join our NHS Specialist Virology laboratory in Hull as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (Pathology Support Worker). The successful candidate will be reliable, hard-working, and welcoming of the challenge of joining our busy and friendly team. The department is committed to training, high-quality diagnostics and clinical excellence, delivering a medical laboratory service to the Trust and the wider SHYPS network (Scarborough, Hull, York Pathology service).
Responsibilities
- Perform a wide range of tasks to support Biomedical Scientists performing diagnostic testing in the department, including preparation of clinical specimens for testing, handling telephone queries from other healthcare professionals, and reception and administrative duties.
- Receive and register requests for Virology tests, perform computer data entry, assist with sample reception and pre-analytical treatment of samples, and assist with referral of samples and general laboratory duties.
- Work as part of a team in a modern, well-equipped Virology department, performing a wide range of diagnostic tests as part of a developing Pathology network.
- Contribute to and participate in weekend/bank holiday rosters and, eventually, late shifts and bank holidays as required.
- Comply with good work practices in accordance with UKAS and other relevant professional and legislative standards.
Laboratory Informatics
- Use laboratory computer systems according to authorised protocols, including data input and recall.

The Laboratory is UKAS accredited. The project is part of the Scarborough, Hull, York Pathology service (SHYPS) network.
