We are looking to recruit a flexible, enthusiastic, friendly, self‑motivated Switchboard Operator based in Scarborough Hospital. Some switchboard experience would be an advantage but training will be given.

Shift Pattern

The switchboard is a 24‑hour service that runs seven days a week; this is a job that would suit candidates who enjoy the flexibility of working different shifts. The shift patterns include days, nights, weekends and bank holidays. The working pattern for this vacancy will be rostered over a 4‑week rota.

  • Week 1: Tuesday 08:30‑17:30, Thursday 08:30‑12:30, Friday 08:30‑12:30.
  • Week 2: Thursday 22:00‑06:00, Friday 22:00‑06:00.
  • Week 3: Monday 10:00‑14:00, Tuesday 12:30‑17:30, Wednesday 18:00‑22:00, Friday 14:00‑22:00, Saturday 14:00‑22:00.
  • Week 4: Friday 08:30‑17:30, Saturday 14:00‑22:00.

Responsibilities

  • Deal with emergency calls in a calm and efficient manner over the emergency bleep system.
  • Operate the switchboard and communication systems, liaising and negotiating with internal and external callers.
  • Deal with and resolve all enquiries in a professional manner, providing help and advice and dealing with the public on the phone.
  • Update and process electronic information onto the directory system as required, chasing up updated information by contacting consultants, secretaries, departments, IT, etc.
  • Perform administrative duties such as processing the information sent to the shared inbox, writing up the doctors on call rota, and accurately logging the Trust taxi usage.
  • Deal with people face‑to‑face to re‑programme and issue replacement pagers/bleeps when faults are reported and replace batteries for paging equipment.
