York Teaching Hospital Facilities Management (YTHFM) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We provide estates, facilities and medical engineering services essential to delivering safe, high‑quality patient care across the Trust’s hospitals and community sites. The Deputy Director of Operations is responsible for the safe, compliant and effective operation of the Trust’s built environment and facilities services.

Main duties of the job:

  • Lead operational delivery across estates, facilities and medical engineering services, ensuring compliance with statutory, regulatory and NHS standards across all sites.
  • Oversee critical services for patient safety, including fire, water, ventilation, decontamination and equipment maintenance.
  • Manage substantial operational budgets, drive efficiency and value, and lead a workforce of around 1,100 staff.
  • Set clear expectations, foster a high‑performance culture and provide assurance to YTHFM and Trust governance structures.

Person Specification – Experience and Knowledge:

  • Evidence of delivering operations in a complex environment, at scale and to demanding timelines.
  • Previous senior leadership roles in Facilities Management.
  • In‑depth knowledge of Facilities Management, Project Management, Asset Management, Engineering Management, Personnel Management.
  • Extensive experience developing complex built environments.
  • Significant experience using Facilities Management digital platforms.
  • Substantial knowledge of best practice in Facilities Management.
  • Experience developing alliances and partnerships across organisations.
  • Proven ability to manage staff in large organisations (c. 1,000) through postgraduate training and experience.
  • Track record of delivering Facilities Management within budget and to deadlines.
  • High political and organisational awareness for complex operations.
  • Ability to make corporate financial decisions affecting the wider organisation.
  • Exceptional influencing and negotiation skills with clinicians, directors and external partners.
  • Experience of complex engineering systems and Total FM organisations.
  • Experience working within a wholly owned subsidiary/limited liability partnership in the NHS.

Qualifications and Training:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or a Facilities Management related subject.
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution (IHEEM, IET, IWFM).
  • Chartered professional registration or accreditation in relevant discipline.
  • Significant experience in a senior Estates and Facilities Management role within a complex organisation.
