Introduction to York St John: York St John is an ambitious, modern university with a distinctive presence across the historic city of York and London, and there has never been a more exciting time to join us. Our London campus plays an important role in extending the University’s reach, global engagement, and academic innovation, alongside our established foundation in York. Central to our ambition across both campuses is an unwavering commitment to academic excellence.

Role Overview: We are seeking to make a number of senior professorial appointments to strengthen our research environment, support collective research development, and enhance our growing reputation for internationally recognised research. The primary purpose of the role is to provide senior research leadership, experience and expertise to strengthen the University’s research environment and to support the development of internationally excellent research within Unit of Assessment 17 (Business and Management Studies), including in preparation for REF 2029.

The role will include structured mentorship of early‑ and mid‑career researchers, contribution to staff and PGR CPD activities, support for grant development, and active engagement in collaborative research and scholarly leadership, with particular interest in candidates who bring experience of developing inclusive research cultures and enabling colleagues at different career stages to flourish.

Postholders will be expected to work closely with School Research Leads across both sites, contribute to relevant School and Campus research committees, and support the delivery of agreed research actions, including the development of research events and conferences.

Ideal candidates will have a strong international research profile, a sustained record of high‑quality outputs and partnership development, and expertise aligned with one or more of the research areas outlined above. These appointments are fractional and fixed‑term, offering flexibility to candidates wishing to align the role with a broader portfolio of academic or industry‑based work. Appointments may be attached to either the York Campus or the London Campus, with opportunities to contribute across both locations as appropriate. Because of the fractional nature of the appointments, candidates do not need to relocate and may undertake the role alongside an existing academic or professional position.

Key Requirements: Commensurate with a professorial appointment, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong and sustained record of internationally excellent research outputs, alongside a strong track record of research income generation. Evidence of effective mentorship, leadership, and collaborative research activity is also essential. Evidence of collegial leadership, mentorship, and contribution to inclusive academic environments will be particularly valued. Flexible patterns of engagement will be agreed to reflect the fractional nature of the appointment.

Benefits:

  • Excellent annual leave entitlement, including five discretionary university closure days over the Christmas period
  • Disability leave (applies to staff who have disclosed a disability and is also available to staff with disabled dependants)
  • Pension scheme
  • Health Cash Plan after six months service
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Paid leave for Armed Forces Reservists
  • On‑campus courses, one‑to‑one tutorials, and online resources to help you develop your digital skills and work with new software
  • Relocation expenses package for certain roles
  • Reimbursement of Skilled Worker Visa application fees and Visa loan scheme for additional costs (if applicable to the role)
