The Team
ITS is the University’s IT directorate, responsible for the maintenance and onward development of IT Services that support the University’s business needs. As the University continues to grow, and in light of a new Digital Plan, York St John is investing in several areas of their IT service. One such area is the enhancement of their Innovation and Technology Services department. With over 30 staff already working within the department, this function continues to grow, creating a range of opportunities with the ambition to deliver a bold new Digital Plan for the University. Our Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) capability sits within the Applications and TEL area of ITS. We support and improve the University’s core learning technologies including the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), e-Portfolio, Media Library, online assessment tools, and related platforms. We partner with academic schools and professional services to design accessible, inclusive, and engaging digital learning experiences that enhance student success.
The Role
The Education Technologist role will perform all elements of IT service management for application services including, but not limited to, ITIL practices/processes such as Incident, Request, Problem, Change, Capacity, Availability, Event, Knowledge and Asset management and will ensure adoption of consistent processes across the IT organisation. The role holder will be a subject matter expert in at least one IT service and perform the role of a service lead. In addition, the role will be expected to lead on the development and delivery of at least one ITIL practice/process and act as a champion for best practice. The role will be expected to provide expertise in support to projects and changes to the delivery of operational IT in line with the University’s Digital Plan. Subject matter expertise will be expected in at least one of the following services: Online and Teaching Applications (Student Management, VLE, Student Apps).
Under the direction of the Applications & TEL Manager, and in consultation with key staff supporting delivery of the Digital Capability and Digital Learning, Teaching & Student Experience goal, the post holder will act as a change ambassador across the organisation. They will support the work associated with the Digital Plan and assist in the implementation of the objectives to improve and enhance digital capability of digital learning & teaching.
We are seeking an enthusiastic Education Technologist to support staff in the effective use of learning technologies and to contribute to the continuous improvement of our TEL services. You will provide first- and second-line support, administer and enhance core platforms, and collaborate with educators to create high-quality digital learning materials. The role blends hands-on platform administration, user support, and learning design enablement with opportunities to contribute to projects and service development. This is a great fit for someone who enjoys solving problems, communicating clearly with technical and non-technical colleagues, and enabling great teaching and learning through thoughtful use of technology.
Duties will include:
- Support for staff using VLE, e-Portfolio, Media Library, and related tools (1st/2nd line).
- Administration and improvement of digital learning platforms (course creation, enrolment, tracking, assessment).
- Partnering with academics and professional services to develop accessible, inclusive, high-quality online learning materials.
- Planning, delivering, and evaluating staff development on learning technologies (blended, online, and in-person).
- Contributing to TEL projects that enhance functionality, performance, and integration of services.
- Creating and maintaining clear documentation, guides, and multimedia resources.
- Using analytics, feedback, and service metrics to inform improvements and evidence impact.
- Testing and evaluating new tools and features using structured methods.
- Producing and managing media to support teaching, learning, and assessment.
- Ensuring accessibility, inclusivity, copyright, and data protection standards are met.
Required Skills and Experiences
You bring practical experience of supporting learning technologies in Higher Education and can communicate with empathy and clarity. You are organised, analytical, and proactive with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a busy, service-oriented environment. Significant experience as a learning technologist in Higher Education (HE), with a strong track record of leading and supporting innovative technology enhanced learning, teaching and assessment. Proven ability to identify development needs and design, deliver and evaluate inspiring training and development interventions for a wide range of academic and professional staff. Experience of implementing, integrating and embedding TEL systems and software into everyday academic practice, ensuring sustainable adoption. Strong understanding of quality enhancement in HE and how digital tools and approaches contribute to improving the student learning experience. Good knowledge of relevant TEL standards, with clear understanding of inclusion, accessibility, and associated privacy, intellectual property and copyright considerations. Experience of managing or leading people and/or projects, underpinned by evidence of continuing professional development in leadership or management. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and interact confidently at all levels within the University. Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively and supportively with colleagues across Innovation & Technology Services (ITS) and wider University departments to deliver shared goals.
