Yolk Recruitment is supporting an established precision engineering manufacturer to recruit a Production Team Lead for its machining operation.
This is a strong opportunity for an experienced production or machine shop leader who understands CNC manufacturing and wants a genuine route into Production Management. You'll take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the shopfloor, making sure people, machines and priorities are aligned and that work continues to move through production as planned.
The role sits below an experienced Production Manager and has been created with succession in mind. Over the next two years, you'll be developed towards taking on the Production Manager position as the current manager moves into a Training and Development role.
You'll need to understand the realities of a precision machining environment, be comfortable dealing with changing priorities and production issues, and have the credibility to lead experienced machinists while keeping delivery, quality and safety on track.
What you'll be doing
- Leading the day-to-day execution of the production plan across the shopfloor
- Prioritising and sequencing work to meet customer and business requirements
- Managing WIP and removing production bottlenecks
- Coordinating people and machine capacity to maintain output and delivery
- Acting as the first point of contact for day-to-day production issues
- Monitoring production performance and taking action when output moves away from plan
- Leading, coaching and supporting the production team
- Communicating daily priorities, expectations and requirements clearly
- Monitoring KPIs including OTIF, throughput, utilisation and efficiency
- Working closely with Planning, Engineering, Materials and Quality
- Supporting root cause analysis and continuous improvement activity
- Maintaining strong standards around quality, health and safety
- Taking increasing responsibility for production control and team performance as you develop towards Production Management
What we're looking for
- You'll need a strong understanding of CNC machining and precision manufacturing
- Previous experience leading or supervising people within manufacturing
- A good understanding of CNC machining processes and machine shop operations
- Experience managing changing production priorities, WIP and delivery requirements
- A structured approach to problem solving and production issues
- Confidence communicating with machinists, engineers, managers and other departments
- A strong understanding of quality and health and safety requirements
- The ability to remain calm and make sensible decisions when priorities compete
- An HNC, HND or degree in Engineering or Manufacturing would be useful, although equivalent industry experience is equally relevant
This role could suit an experienced Production Supervisor, Machine Shop Supervisor, CNC Team Leader, Manufacturing Team Leader or a Senior Machinist who already takes responsibility for people and production and is ready for the next step.
What's on offer
- £48,000 - £50,000 depending on experience
- Days only, early finish Friday.
- Structured development towards a Production Manager role
- Direct mentoring from an experienced Production Manager
- 33 days holiday
- 10% pension
