Meritus are recruiting for a Prototype Technician to join a leading technology and engineering consultancy in Romsey.
PROTOTYPE TECHNICIAN - UP TO £60,000 PER ANNUM - ROMSEY, HAMPSHIRE - REQUIRED TO UNDERGO SC CLEARANCE - SECTOR: DEFENCE
The successful candidate will support the manufacture, modification, repair and testing of prototype PCBs, cable forms and complex electro-mechanical assemblies, working closely with engineers, product managers and project teams across advanced technology programmes.
The Role
Working as part of the Prototype Technician Services team, you'll provide hands-on technical support across prototype manufacture, PCB assembly, cable manufacture, product modification, fault finding and repair. You'll work closely with the wider engineering community, helping to turn design concepts into functional prototypes while providing practical input around manufacturability, component selection and development.
Key Responsibilities
- Manufacture prototype electronic assemblies in line with project requirements.
- Carry out PCB assembly, modification, rework and repair, including fine-pitch surface-mount components.
- Work under magnification and microscopes for extended periods, including soldering and reworking components down to 0201 size.
- Undertake BGA rework and other complex PCB assembly activities.
- Manufacture and modify cable forms and wiring assemblies.
- Carry out electro-mechanical assembly and box-build activities.
- Interpret and work accurately from engineering drawings, schematics and technical documentation.
- Provide technical support to engineers across PCB, cable and product design activities.
- Provide practical input into design for manufacture (DFM) and prototype development.
- Support component selection and advise on manufacturing approaches and emerging technologies.
- Fault find, diagnose and repair non-conforming or defective products.
- Produce and contribute to technical documentation including test reports, concessions and work instructions.
- Provide troubleshooting assistance to the wider engineering community.
- Work closely with Engineers, Product Managers and Project Managers to deliver prototype requirements to agreed timescales.
- Support wider manufacturing and production activities where required.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with relevant internal procedures, quality requirements and industry standards.
About You
We're looking for an experienced Prototype Technician, Electronics Technician or Production Technician with strong practical experience in PCB assembly and electronic prototyping. You'll ideally have:
- Experience working within an electronics development or prototype manufacturing environment.
- Strong practical PCB assembly, modification and rework experience.
- Extensive experience with surface-mount technology (SMT) and fine-pitch components.
- Experience working to IPC standards or higher.
- Experience working under microscopes and with magnification for extended periods.
- Experience with cable forming and prototyping.
- Experience with PCB modification and repair.
- Experience with box builds and electro-mechanical assemblies.
- Ability to confidently interpret engineering drawings, schematics and technical documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to technical work.
- Ability to work to defined processes and quality standards.
- Strong troubleshooting and fault-finding capability.
- Ability to work effectively with engineers and communicate technical issues clearly.
- A self-motivated approach with the ability to work to tight project deadlines.
Desirable Experience
- BGA rework experience.
- Experience with complex electronic or high-reliability assemblies.
- Experience supporting R&D, prototype or new product introduction (NPI) environments.
- Experience providing technical input into design for manufacture.
- Previous experience working within Defence, Aerospace or other highly regulated engineering environments.
