Yolk Recruitment is working with an innovative engineering and technology business to recruit an Electronics Design Engineer to join its growing product development team in Swansea. This is an excellent opportunity to work on the design and development of technically complex electronic products, taking projects from early-stage concepts and prototypes through to verification, validation and manufacture.
Working closely with Electronics, Software, Mechanical and Manufacturing teams, you'll contribute to both new product development and the continuous improvement of existing products, with a particular focus on performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost. The business is open to different levels of experience and is particularly interested in Engineers who are naturally curious, enjoy practical problem-solving and are comfortable combining hands-on laboratory work with electronics design and development.
Electronics Design Engineer Responsibilities:
- Design and develop electronic hardware for new and existing products, from initial concepts and prototypes through to production-ready designs.
- Develop and evaluate power electronics, power supplies, RF circuitry and embedded electronic systems.
- Produce schematic designs and PCB layouts, supporting component selection and design decisions throughout the development lifecycle.
- Build, test and troubleshoot prototype electronics within a hands-on laboratory environment.
- Carry out verification and validation activities, identifying faults, analysing performance and implementing appropriate design improvements.
- Work closely with Software and wider Engineering teams to ensure effective integration between electronic hardware and embedded systems.
- Support the development of products requiring a high level of reliability, fault tolerance and safety.
- Design and develop test equipment and fixtures to support development, validation and manufacturing activities.
- Review existing designs to identify opportunities to improve BOM cost, component availability and product performance.
- Work with Manufacturing and Supply Chain teams to improve design for manufacture, reducing assembly complexity, calibration requirements and production costs.
- Support product reliability and serviceability improvements, investigating recurring issues and implementing practical engineering solutions.
- Work with external manufacturing partners in the UK and overseas, providing technical support throughout prototype and production stages.
- Undertake PCB rework, component replacement and hand soldering during prototype development and fault-finding activities.
- Support EMC testing and compliance activities, investigating and resolving issues identified during development and testing.
- Produce clear engineering documentation, design records, test reports and supporting technical information in accordance with relevant product and regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement across electronics development processes, testing methods and existing product designs.
The Experience You'll Bring:
- Previous experience within an Electronics Design Engineer, Electronic Engineer, Hardware Design Engineer, Electronics Development Engineer or similar position.
- Strong practical knowledge of electronic circuit design, development, prototyping and testing.
- Experience with power electronics and modern power supply design; exposure to high-power RF generation would be particularly advantageous.
- Understanding of embedded microcontrollers and wired communication interfaces.
- Experience designing PCBs using Altium Designer or similar electronics design software.
- Good understanding of EMC principles, testing and designing products with compliance in mind.
- Experience carrying out electronics verification, validation, fault-finding and structured testing.
- Comfortable working hands-on with prototype hardware, including soldering, modification and rework.
- Experience developing test equipment, test fixtures or production test solutions would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of Power Factor Correction (PFC) and fault-tolerant electronics would be beneficial.
- Previous experience working with external or contract manufacturers would be advantageous.
- Experience developing products within a regulated or safety-critical environment would be highly desirable.
- Knowledge of IEC 60601 or experience producing technical documentation to support product compliance would be advantageous.
- Able to produce clear technical documentation and laboratory/test reports.
- A practical, inquisitive approach to engineering with the ability to investigate problems, challenge existing designs and develop effective solutions.
Benefits:
- Salary of up to £60,000 salary, dependent on experience.
- Opportunity to work on the development of innovative, technically complex products.
- Exposure to the complete product lifecycle from initial concept through to manufacture.
- Combination of electronics design and hands-on laboratory development.
- Opportunity to contribute to both next-generation product development and existing product improvement.
- Collaborative multidisciplinary Engineering environment.
- Scope to influence product performance, reliability, manufacturability and future development.
