YMCA of Upper Palmetto provides a pay range of $19.00/hr – $25.00/hr, based on skills and experience assessed during recruitment.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator/Director or Branch Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Water Aerobic Instructor is responsible for providing safe, effective and enjoyable group exercise classes. The instructor also enhances program quality, growth, and participant retention, and assists with branch activities such as special events.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and effective workout in the scheduled class format, following current accepted exercise physiology practices.
  • Supervise and guide participants through a workout that includes warm‑up, cardiovascular endurance, cool‑down, strength and flexibility, while accommodating varied abilities.
  • Maintain a safe aquatic environment by keeping the workout area and pool entrance clear of obstacles; clean, organize, and maintain all equipment after class.
  • Reduce injury risk by adhering to national YMCA safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrate variations or modifications to encourage pacing and pain‑free movements.
  • Know and follow emergency procedures as needed.
  • Act as primary responder in case of injury, accident, or illness in the pool area and provide backup to the lifeguard as required.
  • Start and finish classes on time; if unable to teach, find a suitable substitute.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles without promoting specific diets or supplements.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and special events.
  • Develop member relations and community involvement.
  • Provide individualized exercise and fitness instruction based on class needs.
  • Increase YMCA exposure to non‑member participants.
  • Participate in staff activities, including meetings and functions.

Qualifications

  • Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED/Blood Borne Pathogens/Basic First Aid/Emergency Oxygen Administration (must obtain Emergency Oxygen Administration within 30 days of hire if not already held).
  • Experience teaching water aerobics.
  • Current nationally recognized certification in the class type taught.
  • Willingness to teach a minimum of one regular water aerobics class per week.
  • Maintain all certifications and provide copies annually to the aquatics coordinator/director or branch director.
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills.
  • Team player willing to substitute teach.
  • Physical ability: walking, carrying, sitting, seeing, hearing, crouching, lifting (25 lb), pushing, kneeling, standing, speaking.
