The Lifeguard is responsible for supervision of swimmers during recreational and fitness swims; administers First Aid, exercises control of the swimmers and maintains all safety and sanitation procedures according to the policies of the Upper Palmetto Aquatics Department and State Swimming Pool Operations Codes.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Aquatics Director or Head Lifeguard and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the lifeguard will assist the Aquatic Director with various branch activities such as special events and other activities that occur on various occasions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the safety of facility patrons
  • Maintains a constant surveillance of the pool area
  • Enforces all of the facility’s policies, rules and regulations
  • Responds to patron inquiries and concerns as well as provides branch information as needed
  • Inspects the aquatic facility on a daily schedule and reports unsafe conditions and equipment to supervisor
  • Completes records and reports regarding patron attendance, water chemistry, incidents and accidents
  • Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff
  • Participates in all staff meetings and in-service trainings
  • Conducts aquatic facility maintenance as assigned
  • Maintains a safe, clean, well-supervised pool area that welcomes participation
  • Team work is promoted and demonstrated
  • Communicates aquatics programs, rules and regulations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 15 years old
  • Must have a current nationally recognized Lifeguard Certification
  • Current certification in Professional CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, and O2
  • Must present a professional, mature image, and have excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Must have a positive attitude and desire to achieve the mission of the Upper Palmetto YMCA
  • Must be able to accomplish the following: remaining alert, sitting for extended periods, communicating with others immediately when responding to an emergency, observing all assigned areas of the pool or water park, performing all needed rescues, resuscitation and survival skills, thinking in abstract, solving problems, making quick decisions, having adequate memory skills, and acting swiftly in an emergency

  • Walking, carrying, sitting, seeing, hearing, crouching, lifting (25 pounds), pushing, kneeling, standing and speaking
