Job Purpose:

YMCA George Williams, Southampton is located close to Southampton City centre and is a purpose-built housing facility accommodating 52 people aged 18-25, some of whom have complex needs, supporting them to live independently. As a key member of the Youth Engagement Team working at Southampton, this post will deliver evidenced-based and youth-focused programmes to residents and the wider Southampton Community.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, promote and deliver engaging and relevant activities and programmes on a daily basis to young people.
  • Support, mentor, coach and ‘walk alongside’ individual young people in their pursuit of their personal goals.
  • Undertake risk assessments and support planning.
  • Support the delivery of activities that involve the wider community, including at our adjacent youth centre.
  • Engage with third parties to enable them to deliver specialist support and activities to young people.
  • Act as an advocate for young people and to signpost and support access for them into agencies and services appropriate to the young people’s needs.
  • Actively support job search, training, and volunteering opportunities with young people who are not in education, employment, or training.
  • Assist with the selection and induction of those applying for accommodation.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience of programme delivery in youth, adult or community-based service.
  • A strong advocate for young people who have complex needs.
  • Knowledge of trauma informed approaches.
  • Experience of working with young people who have experienced trauma, poor emotional wellbeing or substance misuse will be useful.
  • Ability to react positively and effectively when faced with unwanted high-risk behaviours from young people.
  • Good level of IT proficiency.
  • An understanding of safeguarding principles and procedures.
  • An understanding of the issues facing young people.
  • A commitment to equality and diversity.
