Reporting to the Courses Director, The Hotchkin Course Head Greenkeeper will provide leadership, direction and technical expertise across all aspects of golf course maintenance. The successful candidate will lead a skilled and dedicated Greenkeeping team, ensuring the Hotchkin Course consistently meets the high standards expected of one of the UK's premier golfing venues.

Description:

The National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa, is seeking an exceptional Head Greenkeeper to lead the maintenance and presentation of the world‑renowned Hotchkin Course.

Recognised as one of the finest heathland golf courses in the world and ranked among the world's top 100 courses, the Hotchkin Course is synonymous with championship golf, exceptional conditioning and outstanding playing surfaces. The Role

Reporting to the Courses Director, The Hotchkin Course Head Greenkeeper will provide leadership, direction and technical expertise across all aspects of golf course maintenance. The successful candidate will lead a skilled and dedicated Greenkeeping team, ensuring the Hotchkin Course consistently meets the high standards expected of one of the UK's premier golfing venues.

This is a hands‑on leadership role requiring excellent agronomic knowledge, strong people management skills and a passion for delivering exceptional playing conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading, motivating and developing the Greenkeeping team, promoting a positive culture of professionalism, teamwork and continuous improvement
  • Delivering consistently outstanding playing conditions across the Hotchkin Course and associated practice facilities
  • Planning and implementing agronomic programmes including mowing, irrigation, nutrition, aeration, topdressing and integrated pest and disease management
  • Coordinating daily, seasonal and annual maintenance programmes
  • Monitoring turf performance and applying modern agronomic practices to continually improve course presentation and playability
  • Supporting the Courses Director with strategic planning, budgeting and resource management
  • Implementing golf course improvement projects and long-term course development initiatives
  • Ensuring machinery, equipment and operational resources are maintained efficiently and effectively
  • Maintaining the highest standards of health and safety, environmental stewardship and operational compliance

About You

  • A recognised greenkeeping qualification, Level 3 or above; Desirable qualifications include a degree or HND in Sports Turf Management or Agronomy, together with professional accreditation such as BIGGA CPD or BASIS
  • Significant experience in a senior greenkeeping or course management position. Experience of maintaining heathland golf courses would be highly advantageous, together with an understanding of the specialist agronomic practices associated with heathland turf
  • Strong technical knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation, and agronomy
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire, develop and support a high‑performing team
  • Experience of planning workloads, managing resources and working within budgets
  • Strong communication, organisational and decision‑making skills
  • A proactive approach, excellent attention to detail and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Experience preparing golf courses for championship competitions or major events
