The role of a vehicle service technician is to maintain, service and repair vehicles to a consistently high standard. Service technicians are trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engine and exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features. The role will vary by employer based upon the specific needs of the location.

Responsibilities

  • Servicing vehicles by carrying out check and maintenance
  • Repairing and replacing faulty parts
  • Developing an understanding of workshop equipment
  • Advising the service receptionists about required repairs
  • Producing time estimates
  • Maintaining repair and service records
  • Contributing to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop; segregating waste for disposal or recycling; complying with industry environmental legislation
  • Demonstrating due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimising risk of injury and vehicle damage
  • Carrying out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle
  • Obtaining diagnostic and repair information
  • Interpreting diagnostic information and using electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability
  • Using a range of diagnostic equipment
  • Following recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and applying advanced diagnostic principles to establish faults
  • Reporting faults using company procedures and recommending suitable further actions
  • Following recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs
  • Testing the function of repaired and fitted components
  • Adhering to business processes and completing documentation following workplace procedures
  • Using ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web-based searches
  • Completing a range of services and inspecting and preparing a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer

Training and Apprenticeship

Training schedule Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (light vehicle) Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard: The programme lasts for at least 36 months (3 years) and you will achieve a nationally recognised qualification. All of our apprentices are employed through the dealer network and attend week-long block training at our state-of-the-art training centre in Stewartby. Block training is complemented by regular coaching visits from experienced coaches as well as virtual classroom sessions and e-learning modules. Your development is supported through your apprenticeship journey, with your learning focused towards achieving a qualification recognised across the motor industry; this provides the foundation to develop your career with opportunities within our expanding dealer network. Before the Standard is met, all apprentices must hold a certificate that meets the EU's 2014 F-gas regulation.

Apprenticeship Programme Details

This apprenticeship programme is an exciting opportunity to start your career with Mazda. The role includes repairing and replacing faulty parts, developing an understanding of workshop equipment and advising the service receptionists about required repairs.

Wage £15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on age; National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices

Training course: Motor vehicle service and maintenance technician - light vehicle (level 3)

Hours: Monday - Thursday, 8.00am - 5.00pm; Friday, from 8.40am - 4.30pm. Initially a 40 hour week to progress to 42 when over 18 years of age

Start date: Monday 5 January 2026

Duration: 3 years
