We’re looking for a technically skilled and visionary Engineering Manager to lead the design and delivery of high-quality, data streaming products that drive innovation and impact across Yelp. Yelp’s Data Streaming infrastructure is the backbone for essential functions like machine learning, real‑time alerting, sales and marketing systems, and experimentation. Handling millions of reviews, ad clicks, tens of thousands of daily photo uploads, we manage a massive scale of user data. As the leader of this team, you will take on the complex task of ensuring data freshness across our entire ecosystem. In this role, you’ll guide a growing team of SREs and software engineers, own the strategy behind scalable pipelines, and partner closely with multiple cross‑functional stakeholders including engineers and business leaders to ensure consistent and reliable access to meaningful insights.

What You’ll Do

  • Foster and build a fun, diverse, and inclusive culture that reflects Yelp’s values.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to the team critical incident resolution, and contributions to strategic projects.
  • Develop clear and trusted data streaming platforms that follow a “data as a product” philosophy to support company‑wide decision‑making.
  • Lead the design, development, and scaling of modern data pipelines that support analytical and operational use cases while driving innovation through AI assisted development, monitoring, schema validation, and performance tuning.
  • Define and enforce best practices for pipeline architecture, testing and documentation.
  • Own and manage SLAs for streaming systems, proactively ensuring quality, reliability, and incident response readiness.
  • Partner cross‑functionally with engineering and business teams to gather requirements and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Continuously improve the internal developer experience through tooling, automation, and documentation such as project wikis and runbooks.

What It Takes To Succeed

  • Experience in engineering or backend development roles, with demonstrated success building large‑scale maintainable data streaming systems.
  • Several years of experience leading and mentoring engineering teams, preferably in the Streaming space, with a focus on impact, growth, and collaboration.
  • Good communication skills to engage with a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences while driving strategies related to streaming architecture, both batch and real‑time processing frameworks (e.g., Paimon, Kafka, Spark, Flink).
  • Proven background in cloud‑native solutions (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Command of your favorite modern programming language: Python, Ruby, Java, Objective‑C, C++, etc.
  • Committed to creating a culture of operational excellence, documentation, trust, and continuous improvement across the team and organization.
