YASA is seeking a skilled engineer to lead the development, optimisation, and maintenance of our custom simulation toolchain for magnetic and thermal performance. We\’re looking for someone with proven experience in simulation toolchains, strong software engineering expertise, and the leadership to guide a high-performing technical team. This is a high-impact role with the opportunity to shape the future of innovation at YASA.

About YASA

YASA, a Mercedes Benz group company, is leading the way in EV Motor Revolution with our patented and unique Axial Flux Technology. Our motor is more powerful, lighter, and smaller than our competitors. Our spirit of innovation drives us to continually explore and test new technologies, a mindset that exists from early-stage R&D projects through to manufacturing optimisation. We stay true to the freedom and flexibility that drove our success as a start-up, alongside having the stability, security, and roadmap of an established organisation.

What You\’ll Do:

  • Lead the development and maintenance of the YASA simulation software toolchain (magnetic and thermal models), importing inverter, gearbox and vehicle models to support when required and managing integration and data of the software components.
  • Liaise with software vendors to resolve simulation bugs and to ensure YASA is effectively and efficiently using external packages
  • Configure and debug multi-dimensional optimisation studies, investigating trade-offs of different topologies and systems, including inverter, gearbox and vehicle models
  • Validate simulations against component and motor level test data and devising tests to ensure toolchain robustness
  • Collaborate with DevOps Engineers to oversee and maintain toolchain infrastructure, including SQL databases, Git repositories, and Docker containers.
  • Contribute to team R&D effort by:
  • Investigating new simulation, measurement and data analysis
  • Researching new materials, processes and technologies
  • Improving modelling fidelity.

To succeed in this role, we believe you\’ll need:

  • Experience using and customising 2D or 3D FEA software packages. (E.g. Ansys, Abaqus, SimScale, COMSOL)
  • A relevant degree or equivalent in an engineering, maths or physics discipline.
  • Familiarity with Git, CI/CD, SQL databases and Docker.
  • Experience using MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience programming in Python.
  • A background in electrical machine design and simulation.
  • A desire to build and maintain good software working practises.
  • An interest in the automotive/energy sector, specifically vehicle electrification.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and will be able to learn and think independently.

Our mission is to lead the design and delivery of the best electric motor technology available. We believe that diversity of thought, and experience is a key driver of innovation. Research shows that while men apply to jobs if they meet ~60% of criteria, women and those in traditionally underrepresented groups tend to only apply if they check all boxes. So if you think you have what it takes but don’t meet every single point, please still get in touch. We’d love to have an initial chat and see if you could add value.
