About The Position Assistant Supervisors serve as lead members of the direct care team, providing the same day‑to‑day functions as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) but with administrative responsibilities including training, scheduling, systems management, and in some cases directly supervising other DSPs. Depending on the supports needed, Assistant Supervisors may work in a person’s home, a family’s home, a YAI residence, at a day habilitation center, or out in the community.

Key/Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties of a Direct Support Professional (DSP 1‑3) ensuring supervision, protection, and care of persons supported in the assigned program, maximizing strengths and facilitating social connections.
  • Ensures health, wellness and safety by providing appropriate supervision and taking the lead during crisis situations, effectively deescalating related issues and directing DSPs while adhering to policies and regulations.
  • Ensures implementation of person‑centered plans, including protective oversight (IPOPs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), and Staff Action or Life Plans, and trains staff on plans’ intentions and goals.
  • Models professionalism at all times, proactively prioritises duties with limited direction, accepts changes, and approaches others positively.
  • Assists Program Supervisor with staffing and coverage, entering and modifying schedules, and ensuring minimum coverage by qualified staff.
  • Assists Program Supervisor with oversight of program financial systems, maintaining ledgers, reconciling petty cash, and documenting receipts in electronic systems.
  • Coordinates supply‑related needs, overseeing inventory and ordering of food, household and toiletry supplies, and medications with appropriate documentation.
  • Reports maintenance, upkeep and safety concerns at facilities and assists in coordinating resolutions.
  • Supports regular and ad‑hoc facility checks, reviewing logs and documents to ensure compliance.
  • Assists Program Supervisor with ensuring completion of all applicable training, education and credentials for staff.
  • Provides effective leadership on shift, applying rules, assigning duties, assessing performance, and escalating concerns to leadership.
  • Completes and maintains necessary trainings and certifications, including specialized trainings for program and position compliance.
  • May support the region or agency through committee participation and special projects, including leadership of agency‑wide initiatives.
  • May facilitate formal agency trainings under YAI Knowledge leadership and serve as a YAI‑certified trainer in designated areas.
  • May be required to operate a YAI motor vehicle to transport individuals to and from programs and locations, holding appropriate credentials.
  • Complies with all Federal, State, Local and other regulatory agency requirements, including HIPAA.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Healthcare or a related field and at least six (6) months of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and/or supporting adults or children with complex needs in a group or individual setting.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience with I/DD and/or in a related human services or healthcare role, including or supplemented by six (6) months of supervisory or lead experience.
  • At least four (4) years of experience in a direct care role (e.g., DSP) in a YAI program in good standing.
  • Must hold foundational certifications for the current service setting: Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention – Revised (SCIP‑R), CPR (issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association) and YAI‑issued Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP) certification for residential assignments or Day Services Model Mentorship Training for day assignments.
  • Current YAI employees changing settings must obtain AMAP (for new residential assignment) or Day Services Model Mentorship Training (for new day assignment) and any additional certifications within three (3) months of appointment.
  • Newly hired employees must obtain (and maintain) required YAI certifications within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Must maintain foundational certifications as described above and any required program‑specific certifications; for DSPs changing programs/settings, must obtain and maintain applicable certifications within three (3) months of appointment.
  • Satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training; all newly hired employees must be at least 18 years old and obtain required YAI certifications within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for documentation and provider liaison.
  • Ability and willingness to lead, direct and teach others technical skills on‑the‑job and through formal training.
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn electronic systems such as Workday and electronic medical record/documentation systems.
  • Enthusiasm for working with people with I/DD, initiative, positivity, patience, empathy and compassion.
  • Ability and willingness to assist with a variety of supports and ADLs, including exposure to bodily fluids with limited direction.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities while addressing changing needs collaboratively with leadership.
  • Ability to work beyond regularly scheduled hours/shift and to report as scheduled on holidays, inclement weather or emergencies to maintain minimum coverage.
  • Ability to remain calm, act assertively and display professional competence in stressful situations with challenging individuals or behaviours in a high‑energy, fast‑paced environment.
  • For assignments that require transporting persons, must hold or obtain and maintain a valid Driver’s License and Van certification (based on position/location/program).
  • Ability to meet essential physical demands of the position, including frequent walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, and handling and moving individuals of any weight with assistance or equipment, and performing emergency interventions per the person’s Behavior Support Plan.

Preferred Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Valid NY State Driver's License (highly preferred for assignments in areas with limited public transportation).
  • Lead experience as a Direct Support Professional and/or supervisory experience in a related area.
