A little about us: Yahoo News helps millions of people make sense of the internet's biggest stories every day. We are looking for a talented, US-focused journalist to join our editorial team in a hybrid role, leading our flagship daily newsletter while contributing hands-on reporting.
You will lead the day-to-day production of the Yodel newsletter, working closely with editors to deliver an engaging briefing for subscribers. You'll also work with the UK and US newsroom teams to deliver engaging, high-quality journalism about the stories driving conversation across America. This role is ideal for a self-starter who sees the opportunity to shape coverage that reaches millions of readers every day.
Key responsibilities:
- Yodel newsletter: Write Yahoo's daily Yodel newsletter, curating the day's most important stories with an engaging voice tailored to a US audience. Work with editors to shape story selection and structure for each edition. Ensure every edition meets the highest standards of accuracy, balance and clarity. Monitor newsletter metrics to inform strategy and improve overall performance.
- Drive news coverage: Pitch, write and edit US-focused articles, predominantly covering general news, tech and internet culture. Identify opportunities for original reporting, explainers and distinctive angles that add value beyond the news cycle. Apply data insights to refine editorial decisions and output. Use AI-assisted tools to optimise workflows while applying rigorous editorial judgement to all outputs.
- Collaborate across teams: Work closely with UK and US editors to align on priorities and tone. Ensure smooth handover of stories, context, and coverage across time zones. Partner with editors and audience teams to identify stories and formats that resonate with US readers. Use available tools (including AI-assisted workflows) to support speed and consistency.
Key skills and experience:
- At least 4 years' experience in digital journalism for US audiences.
- Excellent understanding of the US news landscape and what drives audience interest.
- Experience working on newsletters or other audience-focused products.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional writing and editing skills with a clear, engaging, and conversational style.
- Comfortable making confident editorial decisions in a fast-moving news environment.
- Proven ability to produce clean, accurate copy under pressure and manage deadlines.
- Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT or Claude to support research and editorial workflows, alongside the editorial judgement to evaluate outputs for accuracy, bias and tone.
- Comfortable collaborating across teams and adapting to evolving workflows.
- Experience using analytics tools (such as Parsely or Google Analytics) to inform editorial decisions and optimise content performance.
