As an Application Support Engineer at Sensus , you will play a key role in supporting and maintaining bespoke and open-source applications that enable our smart metering and utility technology solutions. Working within a dedicated team of engineers and support team, you will investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve software issues, replicate and analyse problems, and support software upgrades and deployments. You will take a proactive approach to identifying potential issues before they escalate and contribute to ongoing improvements across our platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 2nd/3rd line support for both open-source and bespoke software stacks across Linux, Windows and Android.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve software issues, coordinating with development teams as needed.
  • Support software upgrades, including patch testing and deployment for in-house and customer systems.
  • Proactively monitor application health and performance to maintain system stability.
  • Collaborate with support teams to ensure effective issue resolution and knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and maintain technical documentation/knowledge-base articles, where necessary.

Qualifications & Skills

Required:

  • Proven experience in application support, systems administration, or a related technical support/DevOps role.
  • Strong Linux fundamentals, particularly Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Solid troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities and high attention to detail.
  • Hands-on experience with MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and/or MariaDB (including writing and optimising queries)
  • Good understanding of core networking protocols (DNS, FTP, HTTP, SSH etc.)
  • Familiarity with digital certificates, PKI fundamentals and security principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A collaborative team member who adapts quickly, embraces new challenges, and is eager to learn and expand technical skills.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Java application stacks.
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git or Subversion.
  • Knowledge of AWS and Terraform.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as Bash or Python.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware, Ansible, Docker, or Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of the OSI model and broader networking standards.
  • Knowledge of ITIL or service-management best practices
  • Full clean UK driving licence
