Xoserve is the Central Data Service Provider, that sits at the heart of Britain’s complex gas market as a specialised contract management and assurance company. Xoserve maintains accountability for the delivery of the Data Services Contract for the industry, which is delivered by a key outsourced service provider.
The Solution Architect is responsible for the end-to-end design of technology solutions that meet business needs while aligning with enterprise architecture standards, security requirements and regulatory obligations. Operating at the intersection of business strategy and technology delivery, the Solution Architect ensures that solutions are fit for purpose, scalable, resilient and cost effective. The role holder will work closely with business analysts, business stakeholders, delivery teams, suppliers and Xoserve architects to design and govern solutions from concept through to implementation and transition into service.
Responsibilities
- Translate business requirements, outcomes and constraints into clear, end-to-end solution designs across processes, applications, integrations, data and infrastructure.
- Own and produce solution architecture artefacts, including high-level designs and detailed designs.
- Ensure solution designs align with enterprise architecture principles, technology standards, roadmaps and target states.
- Work closely with business stakeholders to understand strategic objectives, operational needs and constraints, ensuring solutions deliver measurable business value.
- Propose solution options and technology choices, balancing cost, risk, time, operational impact and long term sustainability.
- Engage with third party suppliers and system integrators to assess proposed designs, ensure alignment with architectural standards and manage architectural dependencies.
- Support procurement activity by contributing to requirements definition and option assessments.
- Identify architectural risks, technical debt and dependencies, working proactively with stakeholders to mitigate and manage them.
- Support transition into service by ensuring operational, support and resilience considerations are addressed in solution designs.
- Represent design artefacts and options appraisals in Architecture governance forums.
- Contribute to existing technology evaluation through assessing existing university tools and technologies for supportability and upgrades.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of architecture practices, standards and patterns.
Specialist/Technical Expertise
- Broad and current technical knowledge across solution architecture domains, including application and systems architecture, integration patterns and API design, data architecture and data flows, infrastructure, cloud and hybrid environments.
- Experience designing solutions within regulated or complex enterprise environments.
- Practical understanding of non-functional requirements including security, performance, scalability, resilience, availability and supportability.
- Ability to design solutions that comply with industry standards, organisational policies and regulatory obligations (e.g. data protection, information security).
- Familiarity with modern delivery approaches (Agile, DevOps, iterative and waterfall) and the architectural considerations within each.
- Significant experience in a Solution Architect or senior technical design role.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to assess complex situations and make sound architectural decisions.
- Proven ability to work across technical and non-technical audiences, clearly communicating designs, trade-offs and impacts.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence outcomes without direct authority.
- Experience working with third party suppliers, SaaS and platform providers.
- Capability to operate across strategic planning, detailed design and delivery support as required.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple concurrent initiatives.
- Architecture or technology-related qualifications such as relevant cloud certifications (Azure, AWS or similar). Business analysis or systems design qualifications would be beneficial.
