About XOCEAN
XOCEAN is an ocean data company – we collect data for clients ranging from mapping the seabed to monitoring the environment. However, we do this differently, instead of using conventional crewed survey ships, we have developed a marine robotic system known as an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV).
Overview
This full-time role has you responsible for geophysical data processing, interpretation, reporting and line management of junior colleagues over a 40-hour working week. It will provide an opportunity to be at the forefront of the rapidly evolving USV market, in the world-leading over the horizon USV company with a clear career progression.
Working for XOCEAN, you have the opportunity to work with several different datasets and integrate all these together to tell the story of that area of seabed. This combined with an understanding of the practical applications used by our clients.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Line management of a small team of junior geophysicists.
- Development of processing workflows for new and existing datasets, improving processing efficiency.
- Lead project teams of geophysicists across multi-sensor projects.
- Project processing budget and efficiency tracking.
- Shallow SBP (Innomar) processing and interpretation.
- Magnetometer data processing and QC.
- Side scan sonar data processing including seabed picking, interpretation, production of mosaic and seabed features.
- Creation and QC of final deliverables to a high standard. Final technical review of deliverables before issue.
- Real-time quality control – work with the online surveying team to monitor the data being captured using online and offline survey tools.
- Liaison with sub-contractors, clients and the wider members of the project team to ensure the aims of the project are met.
- Lead technical report writing and client technical discussions.
- On occasion this role may involve:
- Remote data acquisition and processing of MBES, UAV and Deeper Seismic sensors.
- Tech Team support – assisting with resolution of technical issues on the USV affecting data quality.
- Contribution to company R&D and innovation.
- Support the Lead Geophysicist with planning and resourcing requirements.
- Implementing, maintaining, managing and updating all standard operating procedures and processes appropriate to the role.
- Managing and maintaining Quality, Environment and Health and Safety standards including update, implementation and management of all ISO processes as appropriate to the role.
Requirements: Essential Skills / Attributes and Experience
- Degree in Geoscience or Geophysics.
- Experience in one or more of Moga Seaview, DUG Insight, Oasis Montaj, Chesapeake SonarWiz processing software packages.
- Sidescan Sonar processing experience to include seabed picking; target ID and listing; the creation and export of navigationally and gain corrected mosaics. Production of seabed features based on SSS, MBES and backscatter.
- SBP/Innomar data processing to include SEGy conversion, tidal reduction, denoise filtering & gain control and the export of processed Segy data. Data interpretation and export of subsurface horizons and contact hyperbolas.
- Magnetometer processing to include filtering and processing of the data; the creation of residual, analytical signal, altitude and gradient grids, and the production of a final target listing and project specific deliverables.
- 4+ years Marine Survey Experience.
- Strong computer literacy.
- Knowledge of data management and data transfer.
- Enthusiastic, positive and proactive nature with a keen attention to detail.
Desirable Experience
- Coding and scripting experience to include Python, C/C++, MATLAB.
- GIS experience to include Global mapper and QGIS. ARC GIS and AutoCad knowledge would be an advantage.
- Experience with software packages Moga Seaview, DUG Insight, Oasis Montaj, SonarWiz, Seisee, Radex Pro.
- Experience in bathymetry data acquisition and processing.
- Experience of marine survey data acquisition and acquisition software (e.g. QINSy, Qimera, EIVA etc).
