Senior Oracle Database Administrator / Oracle Platform Engineer

Location: London (5 days per week onsite)

Duration: Initial 12-month contract (will extend indefinitely)

Clearance: SC Clearance required | DV Clearance preferred (will upgrade someone to DV in post if you don't have it currently)

We're looking for an experienced Oracle Database Administrator to take technical ownership of a business-critical application supporting a highly secure government environment. This is a genuine production ownership role where you'll become the subject matter expert responsible for the availability, stability and ongoing support of a mission-critical Oracle platform that operates 24/7 across the UK. The existing Oracle estate is mature and built on legacy Oracle and Red Hat Linux infrastructure. Whilst a strategic replacement programme is underway, there is no confirmed delivery date, making this a vital role in ensuring the continued reliability and resilience of an application of national importance.

We're looking for someone who enjoys taking ownership of complex production environments, solving challenging technical issues and ensuring critical services remain continuously available.

The Role

  • You will become the primary Oracle infrastructure and database specialist responsible for maintaining the availability of the platform. Your focus will include:
  • Maintaining maximum application availability across a 24/7 production environment
  • Administration and support of Oracle 12c databases running on Red Hat Linux
  • Oracle RAC and Cluster Ready Services (CRS)
  • Administration of Oracle Streams bi-directional replication
  • Oracle Data Guard (Maximum Availability / Real-Time Apply)
  • Performance tuning and optimisation
  • Database backup and recovery using Oracle RMAN
  • Monitoring system health using Oracle Enterprise Manager, Nagios and SolarWinds
  • Proactively identifying and resolving production issues before they impact service
  • Supporting business users by investigating Oracle PL/SQL database issues
  • Performing data corrections and database code fixes where required
  • Working closely with external suppliers supporting integrated applications
  • Supporting ongoing infrastructure maintenance and operational improvements
  • Contributing technical expertise during the transition to the future replacement platform

Essential Experience

  • Extensive Oracle Database Administration experience
  • Oracle 12c
  • Oracle RAC
  • Oracle Cluster Ready Services (CRS)
  • Oracle Streams / Advanced Replication
  • Oracle Data Guard
  • Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN)
  • Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control
  • Oracle SQL and PL/SQL
  • Oracle performance tuning
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • Experience supporting business-critical production applications
  • Strong troubleshooting and incident management skills
  • Experience working within highly available 24x7 environments
  • Database monitoring using enterprise monitoring tools
  • Excellent stakeholder and supplier engagement skills

Desirable Experience

  • PostgreSQL
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • SolarWinds
  • Nagios
  • TOAD
  • Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) and data modelling
  • Experience supporting secure government or defence environments
  • Active DV Clearance

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to take ownership of a genuinely mission-critical Oracle platform supporting a secure government service where uptime is paramount. Rather than joining a large DBA team, you'll become the recognised technical owner of a highly specialised environment, working across Oracle, Linux and enterprise infrastructure while helping ensure uninterrupted service during the transition to a next-generation replacement platform. If you're an experienced Oracle DBA who enjoys solving complex production issues, taking ownership of critical services and working in secure, technically demanding environments, we'd love to hear from you.
