Job Description
Position: CONSULTANT – INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY PSYCHIATRIST
We are seeking a full-time Consultant Psychiatrist (Intellectual Disability Psychiatry) to join a leading Trust in Northern Ireland, UK. The position is a 2-year fixed-term contract, full-time (10 programmed activities per week), with potential for extension. The role is based at the second-largest hospital in Northern Ireland, which has teaching hospital status.
The post-holder will provide psychiatric services for adults within the trust, working closely with three consultant colleagues. They will take a clinical leadership role in delivering community and hospital-based services for assessment, treatment, and ongoing care of adults aged 18 and above with intellectual disabilities (moderate, severe, and profound) and mental health issues within the Trust area.
The role includes contributing to teaching and training a range of professionals working with adults with intellectual disabilities and/or mental health difficulties. The post-holder will be encouraged to participate in medical student placements and to become a postgraduate trainer.

Key Requirements
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Intellectual Disability Psychiatry via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), CESR, or European Community Rights.
- MRCPsych qualification or equivalent.
- Extensive training and experience in Psychiatry, typically through a higher training scheme, including experience working with patients with intellectual disabilities, and experience working across multi-agency interfaces.
- Valid UK driving license (International License valid for 1 year).
- Desirable: Specialist training in therapy relevant to adults with learning disabilities, ability to recognize and respond to abuse and neglect, knowledge of genetic and neurological disorders, experience diagnosing and managing autistic spectrum disorders, understanding of risk assessment and management, and interest in service development and clinical management.
