Consultant in Infectious Diseases with Microbiology or General Medicine
Location: Dumfries and Galloway (Southwest Scotland)
Salary: Β£111,430 β Β£148,064 per annum (dependent on experience, plus banding depending on rota)

Hours: Full-time (10 PAs / 40 hours per week, maximum 12 PAs) or Part-time / Less than Full-time; flexible and remote working supported where appropriate

Role Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an innovative and committed Consultant in Infectious Diseases with an interest in either Microbiology or General Medicine (with the option of combining with Acute Medicine) to join an expanding, forward-thinking Infection service within Dumfries and Galloway.
The department provides a comprehensive "laboratory-to-bedside" service beginning at the front door. The successful candidate will join an integrated team comprising Infectious Diseases Consultants, Consultant Microbiologists, a Nurse Consultant (BBV), Clinical Nurse Specialists (BBV and OPAT), and Antimicrobial Pharmacists.
The service operates within modern, purpose-built acute facilities offering state-of-the-art diagnostic and clinical technologies, fully single-room en-suite inpatient accommodation, and dedicated negative pressure Airborne Infection Isolation rooms.
Key Duties and Clinical Responsibilities
Outpatient Services

Provide consultant-led outpatient care across general infectious diseases, blood-borne viruses (BBV), Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT), and tuberculosis (TB).

Deliver dedicated weekly clinics for HIV, Hepatitis B (including hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance), and Hepatitis C outreach (supporting elimination targets in partnership with community specialist services).

Manage specialised presentations including Lyme disease and Pyrexia of Unknown Origin (PUO).

Deliver consultations flexibly through in-person, telephone, and NearMe video consultations, supported by translation services.

Collaborate closely with Sexual Health colleagues on contact tracing, complex syphilis management, and PrEP-related clinical issues.
Inpatient & In-Reach Consultations

Provide in-reach infection consultations across adult medical, surgical, and paediatric inpatient wards to support the assessment and management of complex infection presentations.

Work collaboratively with Critical Care, Respiratory, and Acute Assessment units, utilising dedicated negative pressure isolation rooms for patients with transmissible infections.

Provide expert clinical infection input for patients with neutropenic sepsis (liaising with tertiary oncology centers), endocarditis (with Cardiology), and complex orthopaedic or liver concerns.
On-Call Commitment

Candidates can participate in either the Microbiology or Acute Medicine on-call rotas (or both, depending on clinical interests and agreed job plan).
Teaching, Audit, and Research

Deliver clinical and educational supervision to resident doctors, GP Specialty Trainees, and undergraduate medical students.

Engage with local clinical skills laboratories, simulation suites, and MRCP PACES teaching programmes.

Participate actively in clinical governance, antimicrobial stewardship (in alignment with the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group), infection prevention and control audits, and quality improvement projects.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria

Qualifications: Primary Medical Qualification; full GMC registration with a Licence to Practise; inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview); appropriate Royal College Membership (MRCP/FRCPath or equivalent).

Clinical Experience: Substantial training and experience in Infectious Diseases with complementary training/experience in Microbiology or General/Acute Medicine; proven ability to offer expert clinical opinions and manage complex tertiary-level infection cases.

Clinical Governance & Audit: Proven track record of participating in clinical audit, clinical governance processes, and authoring or updating clinical guidelines.

Teaching: Experience in teaching and clinical training of undergraduate students, postgraduate doctors, and multidisciplinary healthcare staff.

Research: Understanding of research methodology and evidence of published work/critical review of clinical literature.

Flexibility: Willingness to contribute to the on-call rota and engage with flexible service delivery models.
Desirable Criteria

Higher academic degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent).

Postgraduate qualification in Medical Education or completion of formal "teach the trainer" courses.

Proven project leadership, service re-design, or change implementation experience.

Experience in developing and deploying new healthcare technologies or remote consulting platforms.
