Role Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) to join a dynamic, well-established team of consultant colleagues based in County Londonderry .
This replacement post is intended to attract a broadly skilled, adaptable OMFS Consultant to support core service requirements, elective and trauma operating, outpatient clinics, waiting list initiatives, and emergency care. The appointee will join a collaborative team providing comprehensive OMFS, facial trauma, orthognathic care, and skin cancer services to the regional population.
While the principal requirement is for a broad general OMFS surgeon, competence or a special interest in the assessment and review of Head & Neck oncology patients within a multidisciplinary team (MDT) framework is highly desirable. Candidates will also have the option to contribute to regional orthognathic services if desired.
Key Duties & Clinical Responsibilities

Clinical Care: Provide continuous, high-quality care for inpatients, day cases, and outpatients across the full spectrum of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Medicine.

Core Specialty Services: Contribute collaboratively to dentoalveolar surgery, facial trauma management, oral medicine, facial deformity/orthognathic care, and skin cancer activity.

Head & Neck Oncology: Contribute to the clinical assessment, review, and follow-up of Head & Neck oncology patients within established multidisciplinary team (MDT) and clinical governance pathways where competent.

Outpatient & Theatre Capacity: Actively participate in outpatient clinics, minor surgery, and inpatient operating lists, assisting with waiting-list management and clinical backlogs.

Emergency & On-Call Commitment: Participate in the senior OMFS on-call rota on an agreed 1:4 frequency (Category A, 8% on-call supplement) with prospective cover.

Teaching & Training: Supervise, mentor, and teach undergraduate medical/dental students and postgraduate junior doctors / Dental Core Trainees (DCTs).

Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement: Take an active part in clinical audit, quality improvement projects, service redesign, and mortality/morbidity reviews in line with statutory and clinical governance frameworks.
Proposed Job Plan (Indicative β 11.25 PAs Total)
The final job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Director/Medical Director upon appointment.

Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 1.0 PA (with Trust expectation of up to 1.5 SPAs / 6 hours negotiated across the job plan)

On-Call / Emergency Work: 3.0 PAs (0.5 predictable / 2.5 unpredictable)

Person Specification
Essential Criteria

GMC Registration: Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC, London) with a current Licence to Practise (or eligible at appointment).

Specialist Register: Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, or eligible via:

CCT (expected within 6 months of the interview date),
-
CESR / Portfolio pathway, or
-
European Community Rights.

Clinical Knowledge: Broad expertise across core Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, evidenced-based clinical care, and emergency airway/trauma management.

Governance & Leadership: Understanding of clinical governance, quality improvement principles, and the ability to lead and coordinate multidisciplinary clinical teams.

Communication & Teaching: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the proven ability to teach and supervise trainees.

Mobility: Full valid UK driving licence with access to a car (or access to approved alternative transport).
Desirable Criteria

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS OMFS) or equivalent.

Experience and demonstrable competence in assessing and reviewing Head & Neck oncology patients within MDT pathways.

Experience in complementary subspecialty areas (e.g., skin cancer, orthognathic care, complex trauma, oral medicine).

Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification.

Formal qualification or established experience in clinical teaching and medical education.

Demonstrable involvement in service redesign, clinical audit, or healthcare leadership.
