Role Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Consultant in Clinical Oncology with a subspeciality interest in Urology and Skin. The post will be based within an established, purpose-built regional Cancer Centre located in County Londonderry.

The Centre delivers comprehensive radiotherapy, Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT), and acute oncology care to patients across the region and cross-border catchment areas. Accredited by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and holding CHKS/ISO 9001 accreditation, the department operates state-of-the-art radiotherapy technology including TrueBeam linear accelerators (VMAT), 4D cone-beam CT (4D-CBCT), and advanced MRI-based planning.

The successful applicant will join an oncology team with a funded establishment for 11 WTE consultant oncologists (8 Clinical and 3 Medical Oncologists), specialist registrars on regional rotation, and dedicated resident medical staff. The post-holder will take a key role in delivering radical and palliative radiotherapy, SACT, multidisciplinary team (MDT) collaboration, and inpatient care for urological and skin malignancies, as well as contributing to the Acute Oncology Service (AOS).

Key Duties & Clinical Responsibilities

  • Tumour Site Leadership: Deliver expert assessment, treatment planning, and clinical management for outpatients and inpatients with urological malignancies and skin cancers (non-melanoma skin cancer and superficial treatments).

  • Radiotherapy Delivery: Lead on advanced radiotherapy contouring, treatment evaluation, and peer review utilising IMRT, IGRT, and VMAT. Dedicated radiotherapy planning clinics are scheduled for patient consent, on-treatment reviews, and post-treatment follow-up.

  • Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT): Prescribe and manage cytotoxic chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and hormone treatments, ensuring prompt diagnosis and management of systemic therapy complications.

  • Multidisciplinary Team Working: Actively participate in site-specific MDT meetings (Urology MDM and Regional Skin MDM), contributing to clinical decision-making, patient selection, and trial recruitment.

  • Acute Oncology Service (AOS): Contribute sessional activity to the Acute Oncology Service on an alternating-week "Consultant of the Day" model, supported by designated Clinical Nurse Specialists and the 24-hour cancer helpline.

  • Inpatient Care: Share clinical responsibility for oncology inpatients accommodated within the dedicated 27-bed oncology/haematology inpatient ward.

  • On-Call Commitment: Participate in the 24/7 consultant oncology on-call rota on a 1:11 basis (Category B), which includes on-site weekend ward rounds (09:00-13:30 Saturday and Sunday) and emergency radiotherapy cover.

  • Teaching & Training: Supervise, teach, and mentor specialist registrars, specialty doctors, clinical fellows, and foundation doctors, while contributing to undergraduate medical teaching linked to the regional medical school.

  • Audit & Research: Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement programmes, and clinical trial development in partnership with the Northern Ireland Cancer Network (NICAN) and the Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Centre (NICTC).
