About the team
The xAI London team consists of software engineers with a focus on large-scale, highly-reliable distributed systems. Our work spans multiple levels of the stack, from build systems, to production backend infrastructure, to frontend development. We have built substantial parts of the Grok production stack. We focus on building high-quality software and are eager to delve into complex technical problems to solve them in the most optimal way.
About the role
We’re looking for an experienced and versatile frontend engineer & UI/UX designer who can thrive in a dynamic start-up environment. An ideal candidate meets the following requirements:
- Expert in TypeScript and React
- Expert in modern CSS/SASS
- Experience in high-quality UI and UX design
Additionally, experience in any of the following technologies and experiences may help a candidate stand out:
- Knowledge of web-accessibility best-practices
- gRPC & gRPC-web
- Knowledge of frontend security best-practices
- Strong understanding of the HTTP protocol
- Experience in advanced web technologies such as WebGL, WebSockets, WebAssembly, web workers, and PWAs
- Native app-development experience (iOS/Android)
Location
The role is based in our London office close to the Piccadilly Circus underground station. We work from the office five days a week, with the flexibility to work from home as needed. Candidates should be prepared to attend late evening meetings at least twice a week to align with our California-based team. Additionally, this position requires semi-regular business trips to California.
Interview process
After submitting your application, the team reviews your CV and statement of exceptional work. If your application passes this stage, you will be invited to a 15 minute interview (“phone interview”) during which a member of our team will ask some basic questions. If you clear the initial phone interview, you will enter the main process, which consists of four technical interviews:
- Coding interview in TypeScript: Write a small app in React
- HTML/CSS interview: Given a screenshot of a UI, implement it
- Design a UI in a tool of your choice (e.g. Figma or Photoshop)
- Meet the wider team and give a 20 minute presentation about previous design projects and complex UI flows you have implemented
Our goal is to finish the process within one week. We don’t rely on recruiters for assessments. Every application is reviewed by a member of our technical team. All interviews will be conducted via Google Meet.
