Purpose of Role

The Junior Developer supports the Business by developing, testing and maintaining business applications, integrations, reports and dashboards. The role combines entry-level software development with Power BI and data analysis, helping turn business requirements and raw data into reliable digital solutions and actionable insight. Working with experienced colleagues and business users, the post holder will contribute to continuous improvement, automation and digital transformation while building strong development and analytical capability.

Key Accountabilities

• Develop and maintain small applications, scripts, workflows and system enhancements under the guidance of senior colleagues.
• Create and support Power BI dashboards, reports and semantic models that provide clear, accurate and useful business insight.
• Use tools to extract, transform, validate and analyse data from business systems.
• Translate agreed business requirements into well-structured technical solutions, reports and data outputs.
• Assist with application, report and integration testing, including documenting test evidence and resolving defects.
• Support APIs, system integrations and automated workflows, including Power Automate where appropriate.
• Investigate data quality issues and work with system owners and users to improve accuracy, consistency and completeness.
• Follow development standards for source control, peer review, security, documentation and release management.
• Produce and maintain technical documentation, data dictionaries, report logic and support guidance.
• Provide responsive first-line support for applications, reports and data queries, escalating complex issues when required.
• Contribute to team planning, knowledge sharing, continuous improvement and project delivery.
• Balancing development, reporting, support and learning priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Understanding unfamiliar business processes, systems and datasets while working accurately and methodically.
• Communicating technical concepts and data findings clearly to non-technical colleagues.

Experience and Qualifications

• Practical experience gained through employment, an apprenticeship, placement, degree course or personal projects in software development or data analysis.
• Experience creating reports or dashboards using Power BI, Excel or a comparable visualisation tool.
• Experience writing basic SQL queries and working with structured data.
• Exposure to the software development lifecycle, testing and technical documentation.
• A relevant qualification in software development, computer science, data, information systems or equivalent practical experience is desirable.
• Experience with Microsoft 365, Azure, ERP, CRM, PLM or manufacturing systems is beneficial but not essential.

Technical Skills

• Foundation knowledge of at least one programming or scripting language, such as C#.
• Power BI skills, including data preparation, relationships, visual design and introductory DAX.
• Excel skills, including formulas, tables and Power Query.
• Basic SQL querying, joins, filtering and data extraction.
• Understanding data modelling, data quality and dashboard design principles.
• Awareness of APIs, JSON, integrations and workflow automation; Power Automate experience is desirable.
• Basic understanding of source control, preferably Git or Azure DevOps.
• Awareness of secure development, GDPR, access controls and responsible data handling.
• Build capability through structured learning, coaching, code review and progressively more complex assignments.
• Develop knowledge of Xaar systems, data, processes and development standards.
• Take ownership of agreed tasks, provide clear progress updates and maintain accurate documentation.
• Actively seek feedback and demonstrate continuous improvement in technical quality and delivery.
