X4 are working with a leading international maritime organisation at an important stage of its growth, transformation and global expansion. They are now looking to appoint a Head of Operational Risk to strengthen and mature the way risk is managed across the business, with responsibility spanning its commercial, maritime and operational activities.

This is a senior appointment with real scope to shape the function. You'll lead a team of 4-5 across an international footprint, working closely with senior leadership and stakeholders across London, Europe and the Far East.

The role will suit a commercially minded risk leader who understands that effective operational risk isn't simply about frameworks and controls. It's about making risk management work in the real world - influencing people, improving processes and embedding stronger risk thinking across a complex, international organisation.

Responsibilities for the Head of Operational Risk
  • Define and drive the operational risk agenda across the organisation, aligning risk management with commercial and strategic priorities
  • Lead, develop and empower an international team of 4-5, creating a high-performing and proactive risk function
  • Strengthen the firm's operational risk framework, controls and governance across maritime, commercial and corporate activities
  • Lead the management of operational incidents, emerging risks and control issues, turning risk data into clear actions and meaningful insight for senior leadership
  • Partner with stakeholders across the business to improve risk culture, challenge effectively and embed practical, sustainable improvements
Requirements for the Head of Operational Risk
  • Strong operational risk leadership experience within maritime, shipping, commodities, trading or a closely related environment
  • A strong understanding of operational risk, controls and governance within complex, commercially driven organisations
  • Proven experience leading and developing teams, with the credibility to influence senior stakeholders and drive change
  • Commercially pragmatic with the ability to navigate ambiguity, challenge constructively and build strong relationships across the business
  • Strong technology and process awareness; experience BPMN/process mapping would be advantageous

This is an opportunity to take ownership of the operational risk agenda within a growing international maritime business - with the mandate, visibility and senior-level exposure to genuinely influence how the organisation operates. You'll have the opportunity to build on what is already in place, introduce greater consistency and maturity across the risk environment and play a central role in supporting the company's next phase of growth.
